energy-saving ideas

hey everyone, i was thinking it might be cool to have a thread for posting little, easy, practical things you all do to save a little energy at home. i figure there are a lot of people on here who do that sort of thing, and maybe we can give each other some ideas.

and maybe we can even just keep it as a practical list...no politics. if this topic bothers you as a political issue, that's OK, maybe just consider these ideas as ways to cut your own personal energy bills...

i'll start with an obvious one: i try to unplug my cell-phone charger and really as many appliances as i can when i'm not using them.

Wear a jumper when it's cold, rather than cranking up the heating.

When I get to Palm Beach Florida from Dec-June during the dry season when I wash my car I wsh it on the lawn. Important to do this since water is always scarce and having to deal with 3 acres of grass. Also NOT using the air conditioning as the air is cool.

Here the heat is turned off until night fall.

  • 1. replace appliances with energy-saving appliances
    2. wash dishes using the dishwasher instead of by hand
    3. wash clothes in cold water and dry on the line (when possible)
    4. get your shopping, work and any other errands done on one trip to town (in rural areas)
    5. replace your tank water heater with a tankless water heater
    6. set your thermostat to no higher than 63 degrees farenheit
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

we save 100 bucks just by not using the clothes dryer.

1 compact flourescent light as opposed to a traditional filament bulb is supposed to be the equivelant of taking 300,000 cars off the road, according to a history channel docu I saw.

Crazy Mary says washing dishes in the dishwasher as opposed to
by hand saves, but I thought the opposite was true. (?)

the dishwasher uses less water. Especially when you use a new energy*star one that doesn't require pre-rinsing. It uses less water than washing by hand. That's why I have two in my kitchen. ;)

10-15% of all energy used is consumed in standby mode. That number is rising.

your tv...your entertainment system-uses 25% of its normal "on mode" energy when it is turned off. the same is true of other appliances. When you go to sleep at night-all those little red lights, all those systems- still using energy, even in standby or "off" mode.

    here's a solution for that... http://www.greenswitch.tv/

    * do an energy audit on your home if you own
    * weather strip your windows/doors in the winter
    * do laundry late at nite
    * unplug unnecessary appliances
    * wear a few more layers in the winter

Get a programmable thermostat for your home heating system. You can set it up to drop the temperature in the middle of the night so you are not running your furnace full blast when you are asleep. You can then set it to turn back on just before you wake up, so you wake up to a warm house. If you use space heaters to heat your house get timers to do the same thing. I have one in my bedroom that turns the little heater on for a few hours before I go to bed, and then shuts off. It then comes on a few hours before I wake up.

Also this probably won't save you any money, but if you can set your dishwasher or dryer to run when you go to sleep (or if they have timers on them set them to run in the middle of the night). In most places power generation can run much more efficiently if there is constant demand, rather than if there is a spike at peak times, then nothing for the rest of the day. Also in some places when there is the spike they have to fire up the more polluting forms of generation to keep up with demand.

Do power strips use energy if switched off? Unplugging multiple stereo/TV components is a pain in the ass, and sometimes impossible to reach. I can't reach my plugs without moving my entertainment center, but can switch off the power strip. Does that help?

Speaking of energy usage, this daylight savings time isn't helping at all. Inside lights and porch lights are on even longer because it gets dark so freakin' early.

The switch on your power bar will totally help. You can even buy power bars with built in timers and set them up to shut everything down at night or times when you know you are not going to be around.

    Ok, thanks.

The bit about unplugging phone charges saving so much energy made me think about power strips being turned off still wasting energy.
