Because of this new law (although I think the legislature has to approve it first):
If you are caught with up to 1 ounce of marijuana, you will only have to pay a $100 fine. No matter how many times you get caught with an ounce or less, you will only get fined. No criminal record.
I think that's great, I've never know someone who only smokes pot to be a criminal. You really don't need to be out and about with more than an ounce too so that's a decent limit. I'm guessing that's for adults only right?
"You think I got my eyes closed but I'm lookin' at you the whole fuckin' time..."
Forgive my pun, but bush has changed the course of our country. This came in my email as did your reply. My question is what was the old penalty. What type of remedy was sought for offending past violations?
Today, voters in Michigan and Massachusetts passed MPP's landmark ballot initiatives to change marijuana policy in their states.
Of the 13 marijuana policy statewide initiative victories in the history of the country, we just scored the second and third most important. (The first was California's medical marijuana law in 1996.)
MPP's Massachusetts initiative was the first time in history that a decriminalization initiative appeared on any statewide ballot, and voters passed it by what appears to be an overwhelming majority. The measure removes all criminal penalties for possessing an ounce or less of marijuana — replacing it with a $100 fine, which can be paid through the mail without lawyers or court appearances, just like a speeding ticket.
And Michigan voters passed MPP's medical marijuana initiative, making Michigan the first Midwestern state to permit medical marijuana use by seriously ill patients (and the 13th in the U.S.). Michigan now becomes the second largest medical marijuana state in the country (second only to California). And as a result of tonight's victory, almost one quarter of the nation now resides in states with medical marijuana laws.
look forward to hearing how precedents will be set in your state...peace

Channel 5 in Springfield just announced it's official. A new civil penalty for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana rather than criminal charges.
I do good things for this state! I visited Boston to see Pearl Jam in 2004 and took a tour of Fenway, I broke the curse and The Sox won the Series. Then I moved to Western MA a few months ago and now weed is legal! I may run for Senate based on that alone.
I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

but baby steps are a good thing. Congrats Mass
So you don't think they will? Seems to me that growing a plant or two at home is safer and better than buying from a shady dealer. And keeping it at home won't concern the police and that $100 fine either! hahahaha!
here's to the state of massachusetts!
(you know, in a good way.)
The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever. Because this is just a ride." And we...kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok? But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

I'm sure they will, as they do now....I would need to look at the laws to see what's proposed for distribution, but I know when the possesion laws were struck down in Ontario, the decrim bill the cons shot down increased penalties for growers and dealers. Possesion and growing are handled very differently in court, so I don't think the $100 fine would apply. One well cared for, mature plant yields a lot more than an ounce.
So really...it makes no sense. Someone has to have more than an ounce, right? Sounds like a good way to get prices up - supply and demand, risk and reward....a boon to the black market.
No, I'm never satisfied
For the record, very few of the weed dealers I've known over the years are 'shady'. In fact, most are (now) family guys with good careers.

And also
"No" income tax reduction for Question 1. http://www.sec.state.ma.us/Ele/ele08/ballot_questions_08/quest_1.htm and "Yes" to prohibit dog racing betting and wagers.
So it went down as the way I wanted it.
