Kindergarten Girl Handcuffed, Arrested At Fla. School

AVON PARK, Fla. -- Police arrested a 6-year-old Florida girl and even handcuffed her when she acted out in class. Police officers said Desre'e Watson, a kindergarten student at Avon Elementary School in Highlands County, had a violent run-in with a teacher on Thursday.

"I was scared," the little girl said.

Police claim the little girl got angry and began kicking and scratching. She even hit a teacher attempting to intervene in the disturbance.

However, the girl's mother doesn't believe the story.

"She never fell out. She is very respectful. If I tell her to do anything, she will do it," Lateshia Wilson said.

The chief of police said his officers did the right thing.

"When there is an outburst of violence, we have a duty to protect and make that school a safe environment for the students, staff and faculty. That's why, at this point, the person was arrested regardless what the age," said Chief Frank Mercurio, Avon Park Police Department.

The kindergartner was booked in the Highland County jail and was charged with a felony and two misdemeanors

    thats not right. a young mother with no father(he wasnt shown so im assuming that there isnt a man in here life) to give discipline

    Sounds like the mother is a bit ignant. Charging the girl might be a bit extreme. but hey, I was charged when I was like 10.

    I hate to say it, I really do, but with a name like Desre'e and a moms name of Lateshia why does this not surpise me one bit?

    First, which I didn't mention before is that the last names of the 2 don't match, to me that implies no father at home. Second, anyone who names their kid Desre'e, or at least having an apostrophe in thier name is in my mind a little crazy.

    And lastly Lateshia as a name does not convey to me as someone who would be a good parent. When I hear that name I think of stripper or a hooker.

    Ah, what about the rest of the kids in the classroom who had to witness her violent outburst? Do you think they would have been affected in any way? I certainly do. If this kid was physically attacking other people to the point where she had to be physically restrained and the charged then that would have been just as traumatising for those watching. Also, an outburst of that magnitude, to me, would suggest that this is not the first time this kid has 'acted out'.

    and the 'young mother' can't provide the discipline because....... Well there's probably a lot of reasons why she can't, but my point is that children do not need a perfect nuclear family to grow up happy and well adjusted.

    As a teacher in an urban environment, I don't have a problem with this. Schools are allowed to do very little to physically restrain students. Police, who are trained, do a better job when there are physical altercations.

    You've got to be kidding. There's something wrong with the system if the school district resorts to police arresting a 6 year old. Absolutely ludicrous.

    Really? All the name implies to me is a woman, who is probably Black and has a cultural name.

    the majority of posters here act like they are so open minded, but they actually live in a little box and have these little preconceived notions of what the world is like or should be.

    did you know that you guys don't know everything?

    you can really tell the [mental] age of the poster just by their comments sometimes

    it makes me laugh and cry at the same time

    arresting the girl may be a bit extreme but the situation highlights one of the biggest problems in schools...parents. I remember going to school and if the teacher said something the parents believed them...now you have a culture where the kids are "perfect"...at least to their parents...and would never do anything wrong. Teachers already have their hands tied administratively and a lot times now they have the parents not even listening b/c little tommy or tina would never do anything wrong.
