Why is character unimportant?

In a world where image means so much... why is character unimportant in a presidential candidate?
To me it seems like a pretty big deal. In an election where policy differences are low (and minimal in the case of Hillary v Obama), why isn't character, charisma, image, etc. a reasonable advantage?
For the record, I am for Obama due to the combination of his stances on issues and, yes, his character and charisma. Is that so terrible?

It isn't unimportant, per se. It's just not all I wanna hear about why someone is deserving of my vote.
I don't think charima and good speeches should outrank your record and accomplishments in your field. And it doesn't excuse the things I find wrong with a person, either.
The problem in politics these days is charisma sells shit to us...just like any good marketing campaign. It's not about substance and getting people behind you based on the fact that you've proven yourself worthy...it's about getting people to like you and think you're an alright guy. People loved this about Clinton and so many said how they could have a beer with Bush and he was one of them, so down to earth. We all cringed then said how the job was too important to base your decision on this and in 2008, I'm still cringing when I hear it.If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.
