    Actually, in context, he was saying that he regrets the rhetoric he used post 9/11:

    "I think that in retrospect I could have used a different tone, a different rhetoric," he told The Times.

    "Phrases such as 'bring them on' or 'dead or alive' indicated to people that I was, you know, not a man of peace," he said.

    Interesting that he can't even admit he's wrong without people crucifying him...

    What is he admitting to? Choosing the wrong words to express his desire for PEACE? It's our fault we didn't understand what he meant?
    2003 was NOT that long ago... I'm not going to pretend i remember it as you do, but I remember what was being said... over and over and over and over and over again.

    Yea, I think that's the point. Back in 2003 he wasn't saying anything that most of the country wasn't thinking (be honest). We were shocked out of our sense of security and wanted revenge - not peace. Maybe as Commander in Chief he should've toned it down a bit but I think most people felt outraged and an over-bloated sense of bravado. I regret some of the things I thought/felt/said back then and it appears that he does too. Like him or hate him, it takes guts to admit you were wrong about something like that...

    There are many places that shock could have taken us. A decision was made to direct that shock towards blind patriotism and revenge, and for that I hold Bush responsible. It is precisely in times of shock that we want our leaders to be discerning of what will be best for the country in the long run.     Possibly. But I'm not arguing that point, I'm just giving the guy a little credit for coming clean about a mistake he made back then.

    But the fact remains that the reason why he is not considered a man of peace, and the reason why hundreds of thousands of angry Italians will let him have it today :D is not so much about the words he chose in 2001 as the actions he took during his presidency.

    When Bush said this, soldiers died, and violence escalated dramatically. It pissed a LOT of people off on both sides which is why he had to say something about it. He didn't just come out and apologise. He was forced to.

    Mr Peace lied himself in to a War, based on suppressed, narrow minded, and highly biased intelligence gathering.
    Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
    and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
    over specific principles, goals, and policies.

    And some of us thought that Afghanistan was justified, Iraq was unnecessary. Some of us knew there was a difference.
    An admission of fault or blame would be to admit that the course of action was a mistake, not the words used to sell an unnecesary war to the American people. An admission would be that he misguided us towards this current situation.
    Instead, he is admitting that you and I were too stupid to understand what he 'meant' to say. you may accept that... but, I do not.

    And when we go overboard, and call for blood, we must live with the fact that it's on our hands....over-bloated sense of bravado or not. One shows what they are capable of when the going gets rough. Bloodthirst and revenge is not about peace, plain and simple. Owning it (and not just the "rhetoric") is the beginning step in taking accountability.

    No. I will give him credit if he Mans Up and admits responsibility for his fuck ups. But, I seriously don't think it's going to happen.
    How often has he blamed someone else for his poor decisions? Fucking admit that Iraq was something up on the drawing boards as soon as he (and his Administration) heard of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Admit that he dropped the fucking ball in response to Hurrican Katrina... that Brownie should never had been anywhere near FEMA. It's always someone else to blame.
