WASHINGTON - Cindy McCain says she will never make her tax returns public even if her husband wins the White House and she becomes the first lady.
"You know, my husband and I have been married 28 years and we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue. My husband is the candidate," Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain, said in an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on Thursday.
Asked if she would release her tax returns if she was first lady, Cindy McCain said: "No."
The Arizona senator released his tax return last month, reporting he had a total income of $405,409 in 2007 and paid $84,460 in federal income taxes. He files his return separately from his wife, an heiress to a Phoenix-based beer distributing company whose fortune is in the $100 million range.
Sen. McCain routinely is ranked among the richest lawmakers in Congress, but he and his wife have kept their finances separate throughout their marriage. A prenuptial agreement left much of the family's assets in Cindy McCain's name.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Cindy McCain's refusal to release her tax returns gives the appearance of a double standard on the part of her husband.
"What is John McCain trying to hide?" Dean said in a statement. "Throughout this campaign, he has acted like his own calls for openness and accountability apply to everyone but himself. Now he thinks he can bring that same double standard to the White House."
Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton filed joint tax returns with their spouses and publicly released those returns.

Well, it worries me that the potential first lady is refusing to disclose her tax returns. She's a shady cat. Anyone remember when she was addicted to painkillers in 1994 and resorted to stealing some drugs from a medical charity she had started, and used others' names for the prescriptions?"If no one sees you, you're not here at all"0

It's a bit worrying, but at the same time, she is well within her rights. And it shouldn't affect anyone's views of John McCain, either.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0

It would probably (somehow) show all the money she spends on pills, and the shady deals McCain funneled through her taxes so he could run.Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

Why? I'm not running for president.
it kinda makes a difference...especially if I get to directly impact and call shots on many aspects of your daily life for years afterwards..Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,

Technically, she isn't running for president either. If you think she's going to have an impact on McCain's decisions, that's fine, but she's still entitled her privacy.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

Oh, I don't doubt there's influence there. But officially, there's no call for her to prove anything.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

I'm all for transparency in government, but if Cindy McCain is pressured into releasing her tax returns, where does it end? What if I'm John McCain's best friend of 120 years, and he trusts me with all his major decisions? Do I show my tax returns, so you'll know who you're electing into office?Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

Do you actually remember that or did you just read that on wikipedia after you saw her on Leno. Its nobodies business what she makes, and i am fine with her not making that public.BORGATA>VIC0 -

It ends outside the term of spouse or legalized union through marriage.
It would be wise to ascertain the validity of whomever has 24/7 access to leverage the president's thoughts and opinions through sexual means...amongst others.Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on this, but I would like to see as much transparency as possible for the president and his wife. They could be making A LOT of money off of how he governs, or making decisions to help investors out, and no one would know.
Is it much different than if his brother did or his best friend got rich off? Not really, but I do think that we should be able to see if they (McCain and his wife) have any conflicts of interest.
The good news thought with her company, is that we will never be endangered of going through prohibition if he is in officeMy whole life

I'd say if you need to see a candidate's spouse's tax returns to know that you can trust them... you probably shouldn't vote for them in the first place.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

normally yes.....in light of circumstances it would be VERY good to scrutinize everything...and very highly.
I say why not... were being spied on all the time.
Maybe she has terrorist affiliations...just saying. There's a nice fat patriot act looking up everyone skirts and it's sounding a like a double standard to me.
