A question for the Canadians (non-political)

So is Vancouver Island pretty rural except for the Victoria area? Seems to me that the Victoria urban area is pretty well built up (300k?), but the rest of the island seems to be very sparse.

Thoughts.

You know, just in case Bush declares himself as King, gotta have a fall-back... when the shit hits the fan, VI seems like a nice place to wait it out.

Vancouver/Vancover Island are both cool places. I find Vancouver and Seattle have more in common than Seattle and a lot of other major U.S. cities.

Vancouver Island is one of the most beautiful and diverse cities in Canada. Just remember they are expecting a massive earthquake on the San Andreas fault which is supposed to send Vancouver Island into the ocean. The safest place in Canada seems to be northern ontario, up in the canadian shield.

Not quite true. Firstly, its the Juan de Fuca plate and the North American plate that are colliding. The San Andreas Fault is a completely different type of fault line in California. Secondly, its not going into the sea but will eventually collide with the mainland millions of years from now, so you should be ok. We are expecting an earthquake but no where is perfect right?

As far as the ruralness of it goes, there are a number of relatively large communties and there are some rural ones as well. It is groiwing quite quickly though, but much of it is still quite pristine. I suggest you visit Tofino where you can find some of the most ancient rainforest around.

We won't be in the ocean..lol..that's too funny people still think that...depending on what part of the island your on and where the quake will hit there may be a tsunami, and flooding, but rest assured we will not be the new Atlantis.

I went kayaking on San Juan Island last week. It is in the States and you can take a ferry there from Anacortes, Washington. It is much more similar to the other small gulf islands (Galiano, Salt Spring etc) than Vancouver Island. There is good whale watching in the area. We came across a pod of orcas that came within 20 metres or so of us which can be intimidating in a wee little kayak.

oh that sounds fabulous. i'm not familiar with the gulf islands. i'll be going there from seattle, and i saw that a vancouver clipper can take us from seattle to san juan (then i think it continues on to vancouver island). i have limited time in seattle, and no passport, so san juan is what would fit my timeframe.

    that sounds so lovely!

    and i hear there's a winery there too. :D

I watched a big presentation on it by some ocean experts. I also used to live in Victoria. But who knows, the whole time growing up in B.C. I always heard there would be a 9 earthquake that would kill everyone. But I never really believed it.

I would deffinately recommend Victoria for anyone planning on moving to or visiting Vancouver Island. Here are a couple of pictures of Victoria

Downtown is beautiful aswell, grab a carriage cruise around the city core. Just be prepared to be harrassed for money by the thousands of bums in the city. At least if you go to the Cosway the bums there play music and stuff, i guess they are called Buskers. ;)
