More money for the Pentagon, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, while its own auditors admit the military cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.

"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

"We know it's gone. But we don't know what they spent it on," said Jim Minnery, Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

    I know, on Sept 10th 2001 was the first time that thought came to his head. that reporter was fast to get the story, write the story, and publish the story, all on the same day rumsfield thought of it. amazing

    Yeah....the staged CIA plot on 9/11 cost $2.3 trillion. Not only that, Donald Rumsfeld (one of the assumed kingpins of such a plot), is complaining about that expenditure.

    Leave it to the Message Pit to find conspiracy in beauracracy.

    heh. i wasn't implying that they used the money for the 9/11 plot, i was merely suggesting that the missing 2.3 trillion dollars was conveniently forgotten about by the next day because of what happened. :cool:

    well, it was a pretty big story, but the timing is pretty suggestive. i mean aftersall, we are talking about donald rumsfeld. he's not exactly an honest man.

    what has he done since 9/10/01 to curb spending...perhaps if you could share that info, some praise may be in order...but saying and doing are two different things...

    well seeing how el queda declared war on us the next day, I think that was left for someone else to look at. if that did not happen, however, it looks as if that would have been a priority.

    that he was actually looking to curb wasteful spending. like I said, the next day, military spending was not wasteful but neccessary. and his job title required him to make defending our coutry the number priority

    sorry about our country being attacked is a bigger deal than $100 trillion.

    like I said, a few times now, at least he was doing something about it.

    if more people in government did what he started to do, there would be alot less waste.

    if I read the story right, rummy was simply pointing out the fact 2.3 was unaccounted for, I missed the part about curbing spending, anyhoo...here is some praise: oh...woo hoo...after 8 months on the job, he made a statement that 2.3 trillion was missing...good for rummy...

    I have to wonder, could rummy multi-task, you know, do two things at once...? perhaps he could direct someone to look into the matter...perhaps that person could do the work and report back to rummy...

    what do you think...? does that sound like something rummy could do...?

    he definitely had the best character in that movie. what an incredible cast, too. i can watch that movie over and over again. :)
