"Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said the state's response will likely be hampered because much of the equipment usually positioned around the state to respond to emergencies is in Iraq. That includes things like tents, trucks and semitrailers."

    This will not hamper the rebuilding of the town. They have to finish rebuilding New Orleans first so it might be a decade or two but it will be done.

    No, turns out there are a few nonwhites living there. Plus the Kansas vote aint what it used to be.

    hmmm....of the 19 National Guard helicopters usually stationed in Kansas, 15 are now in Iraq.

    Chances are, they aren't going to rebuild. Alot of Greensburg is elderly, and they don't see any point in rebuilding. The town's probably gone for good.

    What a tragic story. I grew up in Kansas (the Kansas City area), and tornado sirens where like the clarion call of spring for us. Amazingly, I've never seen a tornado while growing up there, although some have come within a few miles of my house. To this day my most common re-occuring nightmare is getting run down by a tornado.

    I don't want to drag too much politics into this but is criminal, in my opinion, that so much of the important National Guard utilized for disasters like this have been deployed. That's the actual role of the National Guard: to be there for disaster relief and to provide security for the states if the active duty Army and Reserves are deployed. It's been modified somewhat to be more integral with the Reserves but they are still very much depended on for disaster relief.

Under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is a national partnership agreement that allows state-to-state assistance during governor or federally declared emergencies, Kansas has more than 400,000 Guardsmen available to it, he pointed out.
