    Why is Bush President?

election has been over for months.... no need to gloat.
  • As much as I have despised the Bush administration's policies and actions, something I'm certainly not alone in, and as much as I think George Bush is dangerously stupid--again, I've got company here--I think it's unfair to call him a bad politician. Or, at the very least, it's hard to deny that he doesn't strike--or didn't strike, at least around the 2000 and 2004 elections--a very powerful chord with a large base of the American public. Shit, Kerry couldn't beat him. Gore was in the White House for eight years as Vice President before the 2000 election and couldn't land a definitive victory over him. As terrible as he is, Bush has to get some begrudging credit here.

McCain's campaign this time around has been riddled with miscues, ill-conceived attacks, a poor Vice Presidential nominee, financial turmoil being largely attributed to his party, an unimaginable gap in campaign spending--and still the Democrats will not be resting easy on the eve of the election.

Now, as much as the Republican party seems to be a mismanaged group of fuck ups and nut-jobs as of late, maybe the Democrats aren't so hot either? Maybe that's why Bush made it 8 years?

  • Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

I have to disagree. From my perspective, it was Rove that was able to win through superior marketing and organization. If Kerry and Gore had the organization and consistant positive message of Obama, I have no doubt they would have won.

Obama has run an amazing campaign. Best organization and message, and his ground forces have been top notch. Remember we are talking about an african american with a scary name. That's why it's still close in some places, but the negative aspect has been overcome for the middle. 40% will not vote for Obama for no matter what due to a wide range of reasons, but the middle isn't buying the negativity of McCain/Palin, not buying McCain as not continuing Bush philosophy, and not buying Palin being qualified.

You're right like Obama in 2002/4-ish...W. started off by marketing himself as a politician. In 1989 he bought the Rangers under Rove's direction just to get popular. He beat Ann Richard's for governor of Texas in '92-ish, because, as she said, it was hard to beat someone who knew nothing about politics, on a ticket that promoted his Hearts across Arlington campaign to strong arm the city into buying the Rangers a new stadium. This technique of celebrity politician, plus the beginnings of a regime that lied about the reality of their actions (Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind, and so on) helped him win.
