Texas Legislators Block HPV vaccine

Unfortunately, Texas legislators just passed a resolution that bans the Texas governor from requiring the HPV vaccine for school attendance. The ban is in effect for 4 years!!!

    im ok with this. the first time this debate came around some people made some good points about forced vaccination and i have to agree with them. i think it should be offered and available, but im not really a big fan of mandatory inoculation.

    I just think that it is sad how political it all became. Instead of being about health benefits, etc. it turned into a debate about abstinence and sex ed.

    I wish people would take their heads outta the sand and realize that education is the key to disease prevention.

    true, i really dont like this vaccine being used as a sexual political football.

    people piss me off with this shit, Everyone give there kids vaccines. you have to before they can even go to school. Why should this be any diffrent? its a disease like any other, but just because it's an STD we have to treat it diffrently. Teens are going to have sex, no matter what you teach them. Did you know that up untill a few decades ago, girls as young as 13 got married..... and started having children.....

    i dont think we should force any of the other vaccines on them either. it's not just this one. i think it should be an option, you are allowed and encouraged to take. but i dont think vaccination should be the default and you should have to jump through hoops to opt out. i dont care if it's hpv or mmr or tetanus or what.

    13 year olds have no business making babies... give those kids a condom and show them how to use it properly!

    Cou POLIO ugh, I was making a joke that no one minded the polio vaccination. Not to be a dick, but if you could keep your kid from getting a disease by giving them a vaccination, wouldn't you do it? Doesn't that seem reasonable? The reason they give them all those shot before they start school is so we don't have children passing diseases around.

    then get your child the vaccine. yes, i would vaccinate my kid. i just dont like the government making medical decisions for its citizens and forcing those decisions upon them.

    never underestimate the power of stupid fundamentalists in large groups.

    I would imagine one could still go buy the vaccine, or get it from a health clinic.

    I think it didn't help that the former chief of staff for the governor is now a lobbyst for the company producing the vaccine.

    It was in yesterday's New York Times.

    My only concern with mandating it, is that we truly don't know the longterm effects of this vaccine. I haven't really read a ton about it, but it seems that it was rushed and approved rather quickly.

    I think that vaccine is a great idea, but I don't really think that it should be state mandated. If individual school districts can vote on it, that would sit better with me, at least the parents would have a much more direct forum to discuss it and decide about it.

    I do think that is should be thought of and discussed as a health issue, not just a political or sex ed. issue.
