Papa Fanch's solution to the current stale political arena

My father (who is very much a liberal democrat and thus disagrees with me on many issues) had a great suggestion while I was visiting over the weekend.

He believes there should be essentially a "take out the trash" option on the ballot, which is a vote AGAINST both the encumbant and the other major party opponent. If "Take out the trash" wins the vote, then the encumbant is ousted and the opponent is defeated. The encumbant would then serve another 4-6 months, after time a NEW election would be held.

It'd never happen, but it's certainly be a great way to get rid of a lot of these yahoo candidates that we are forced to vote for this November.

    im assuming neither candidate is allowed to run in the new election?

    it's a thought. my fear is that we'd never get anyone elected to office period with that system. people would vote against anyone who is not them, cos we all want to run the government only without actually having to campaign or do any of the work necessary.

    In theory it's a great idea, just to get us out of this stale, overtly political situation that we're in. Can't we do it just for one election cycle? haha

    i prefer the thought of making one-term limits on every public office in the country.
