Or, you could look at it as an additional 1% on top of the 3rd most onerous state tax burden in the nation and say "enough is enough". Don't try to "fix" the problem by throwing more money at it. Figure out why you can't make ends meet with an already bloated tax requirement.

I agree I'm not in love with the idea, but since Federal contribution to this state is not sufficient in many areas the state has to pick up the tab. I don't like the idea of giving federal, state, or local government any more money but at this impass the 1% increase seems like the only viable opition we have. The state legislature has had time to propose other viable alternatives and has been unable to due so. I feel that if you look at both possible outcomes: a. we initiate the increase balance the budget and work on decreasing spending in future years or: b. we don't balance the budget continue to pludge the state deeper into debt and face the same battle next years when the budget is due again. Like I said Corzine is no hero but he is truely attempting to cut wastefull spending in the state but he isn't going to accomplish that overnight and there maybe some bumps and set backs along the way that we have to work through. The legislature is playing politics so that come election time they can save their own asses and they are doing this knowing that many New Jerseyians are now sitting home or working without a pay check all the while the state looses millions of dollars daily from different sources of revenue like the casinos and lottery. So no I don't like a 1% sales tax increase but I am willing to pay it if it means that we can start righting whats wrong with this state.

I think I would hope the legislature would pass a 1 month 1% tax and work on a solution around the clock.

For every dollar that New Jersey residents pay to the federal government we only receive $.55 which is the lowest ratio of spending per federal dollar. Here is a link:

The sales tax is not the problem the problem is the federal government. We pay way more than what we receive in return considering you have states like New Mexico who receive $2.00 for every $1.00 they pay to the federal government. So our tax dollars are going to the benefit of other states while our state slips further into debt. If our return was equal to our investment, let's say, there would be no need for any tax increase.

As far as tolls go we only have two highways that have tolls, the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. You can still get around the state without ever having to use these roads.

But isnt this because, on the whole, NJ is more prosperous than other states. If you look at the map in your link, all the states with low return could be considered more properous than the states receiving the most money.

It would seem that the feds payout money much the same way they receive it, the more you make the more they take.

Yes New Jersey is a more properous state than many other states. New Jerseyians pay the second highest amount of federal taxes per capita, only the residents of Connecticut pay more than we do, yet we receive the lowest percentage of federal funds. Why should other states receive the funds when our own state is in need.

eh...i guess i see things differently. But I do hope this is resolved soon.
