My favourite lyrics at the mo have got 2 be:

BLACK HOLE SUN
In my eyes, indisposed
In disguise as no one knows
Hides the face, lies the snake
The sun in my disgrace
Boiling heat, summer stench
'Neath the black the sky looks dead
Call my name through the cream
And I'll hear you scream again

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come

Stuttering, cold and damp
Steal the warm wind tired friend
Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes
In my shoes, a walking sleep
And my youth I pray to keep
Heaven send Hell away
No one sings like you anymore

Hang my head, drown my fear
Till you all just disappear

Lyrics: Cornell

    At the moment...

    Have no fear
    For when I'm alone
I'll be better off than I was before

    I've got this light
    I'll be around to grow
    Who I was before
    I cannot recall

Long nights allow me to feel...
    I'm falling...I am falling
    The lights go out
    Let me feel
    I'm falling
I am falling safely to the ground
    Ah...

I'll take this soul that's inside me now
    Like a brand new friend
    I'll forever know

    I've got this light
    And the will to show
I will always be better than before

Long nights allow me to feel...
    I'm falling...I am falling
    The lights go out
    Let me feel
    I'm falling
I am falling safely to the ground
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

True :). The second set of lyrics that came to mind were these. That man also got a gift :)

Whatsoever Ive feared has come to life
Whatsoever Ive fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
    Sunspots have faded
    And now Im doing time
Cause I fell on black days

Whomsoever Ive cured Ive sickened now
Whomsoever Ive cradled Ive put you down
Im a search light soul they say
But I cant see it in the night
Im only faking when I get it right
Cause I fell on black days
    How would I know
That this could be my fate

So what you wanted to see good has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours has made it mine
So dont you lock up something that you wanted to see fly
    Hands are for shaking
    No, not tying
    No, not tying

I sure dont mind a change
But I fell on black days
    How would I know
That this could be my fate
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

Spotcheck Billy got down on his hands and knees
He said "Hey momma, hey let me check your oil all right?"
She said "No, no honey, not tonight
Comeback Monday, comeback Tuesday, then I might"

I said Juanita, my sweet Juanita, what are you up to?
    My Juanita
I said Juanita, my sweet taquita, what are you up to?
    My Juanita

Don't want nobody who won't dive for dimes
Don't want no speedballs 'cause I might die trying
Throw me a line, throw me a line
'Cause there's a fat man in the bathtub with the blues
I hear you moan, I hear you moan, I hear you moan

Billy got so sad, dejected, put on his hat and start to run
Runnin' down the street yelling at the top of his lungs
All I want in this life of mine is some good clean fun
All I want in this life and time is some hit and run

I said Juanita, my sweet Juanita, what are you up to?
    My Juanita
I said Jaunita, my sweet taquito, what are you up to?
    My Juanita

Put my money in your meter baby so it won't run down
But you caught me in the squeeze play on the cheesy side of town
Throw me a dime, throw me a line
'Cause there's a fat man in the bathtub with the blues
I hear you moan, I hear you moan, I hear you moan
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

Elliott Smith has so many great lyrics, but I think Angeles is probably the understated genius (closely followed by King's Crossing and Miss Misery).

    Elliott Smith - Angeles

Someone's always coming around here trailing some new kill
Says I seen your picture on a hundred dollar bill
And what's a game of chance to you, to him is one
    Of real skill
So glad to meet you, Angeles

Picking up the ticket shows there's money to be made
Go on and lose the gamble that's the history of the trade
Did you add up all the cards left to play to zero
And sign up with evil, Angeles

    Don't start me trying now
    uh-huh uh-huh uh-huuuh
Cos I'm all over it, Angeles

I could make you satisfied in everything you do
All your 'secret wishes' could right now be coming true
And be forever with my broken arms around you
No one's gonna fool around with us
No one's gonna fool around with us
So glad to meet you, Angeles

    Porch...

    Hear my name
    Take a good look
    This could be the day
    Hold my hand
    Lie beside me
    I just need to say
    What can I take?
    I just want to be
I know that i would not ever touch you
    Hold you
    Feel you
    Ever hold
    Never again

  • In my opinion, the best song of all time.

    "TINY DANCER" BY ELTON JOHN

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

Jesus freaks out in the street
    Handing tickets out for God
    Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad

Piano man he makes his stand
    In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums

But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can't hear me
    When I say softly, slowly

    Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
"Don't come closer or I'll have to go
Holding me like gravity are places that pull
If ever there was someone to keep me at home
    It would be you..."

Sweet Euphoria mine is the heart you own
You lost the grace of the hands that harmed you
In the daze of a thousand yawns
Lost my love, as it is I'm truly gone
In your morning I will sleep
    Fire on an open palm
Death for Jesus and plastic armies
    Wouldn't bring me back again
Sweet as ether eyes I'm blind to them

Gone are your dandelions falling like mine
    Falling on land-mine pillows
tired angels save my love for the lasting one

Sweet Euphoria mine is the heart you stole
Touched and broken are the things you love
Using start to light your candles
Warms my face but I can't remember yours
Gone are your dandelions falling like mine
    Falling like daydream mangos

    Grace
    (Jeff Buckley)

There's the moon asking to stay
Long enough for the clouds to fly me away
Well it's my time coming, I'm not afraid to die
My fading voice sings of love,
But she cries to the clicking of time
    Of time

    Wait in the fire...

And she weeps on my arm
Walking to the bright lights in sorrow
Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow
    Oh my love
And the rain is falling and I believe
    My time has come
It reminds me of the pain
    I might leave
    Leave behind

    Wait in the fire...

And I feel them drown my name
So easy to know and forget with this kiss
I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow

    Fucking hell,

If he hadn't died Pearl Jam would be out of a job.

    We arrived too late
    Our mouths were opening
    I turned off the light
    So come on night
    You're a witness, you
    You've seen me interrupt
    A good old-fashioned fight
    So come on night
    Everyone is gone
    Home to oblivion
    Home to oblivion
    Home to oblivion
    Watched the dying day
    Blushing in the sky
    Everyone is uptight
    So come on night
    Everyone is gone
    Home to oblivion
    Home to oblivion
    Home to oblivion
    Home to oblivion
    I know we're not
    Illegitimate
    In our hearing
    So come on
    So come on night
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

How could I forget this one, "Mona, Where's My Trousers", also by Kevin Coyne? This song was recorded in stereo, with the sung part in one channel, and the spoken part in the other, simultaneously. It's deeply moving, to me:

(Sung) Mona, where's me trousers, they're right upstairs
Mona, where's me trousers, they're right upstairs
Under the meat safe there's a place
Where your father keeps his face
He gives it lots of steam and heat
But on a Saturday night his face is in his feet
Mona, where's me trousers, they're upstairs
Mona, where's me trousers, they're upstairs
La la la la who's that singing that song?
La la la la he must be barmy or something
La la la la your father's gone away
La la la la he's gone away on a ship, he's gone away on a ship
Mona, where's me trousers, they're right upstairs
Mona, where's me trousers, they're right upstairs
    They're right upstairs
    They're right upstairs
And now Denis is going to school now
And his face is just the same as his Dad's
His face is angry and bitter
When he hides it under the fridge
But on a Saturday night he's different
When he's had beer, he's had beer
La la la la who's that singing that song?
La la la la who's that singing that song?
La la la la he must be barmy, he's gone wrong
La la la la who's that singing that song?

(Spoken) It didn't really matter because he didn't really mean to hurt me, he didn't mean to upset me, I mean, when he smacked me, it was quite... it was quite alright because that's his right, really, he is my father and he didn't really mean to hurt me but it was when he took me outside and he took me wellingtons off my wellingtons, he took my wellies off and then he took my shoes and threw 'em in the garden and then I felt ever so unhappy but there was really no point in crying because when I cry he just laughs at me and well, after some time, I do lie sometimes, I know but anyway I went to school and Miss Baxter, Miss Baxter said I was being a good boy and that I didn't deserve to be punished but there you are, I didn't deserve to be punished but anyway I didn't mean to lose that coat, no I... I left it in the cloak room, it was there when I left but afterwards it seems to have gone, it was a new, it was a new duffle coat and I went down... I went down by the docks and I was, I was watching this man in a rowing boat and the boat was sinking, and the boat was sinking and then there was this silly man who kept calling me names, he took away me sweets cause I spend four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, four pence on sweets, that's a lot of money but then again I didn't mean to do it and he smacked me, he smacked me like... he smacked me, he smacked me, I didn't mean to do it, I didn't, I didn't mean to do it, I didn't mean to do it, I'm sorry Dad, I didn't mean to do it, sorry Dad, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it, I'm sorry, didn't mean to do it, didn't mean to do it, didn't mean to do it
