I Can't Take Much More

I can't take much more.
Oh God, not much more.
You see,
When I was a boy
And the world was daylight
And springtime,
I could take it then,
Shoulder it like a preposterous cow
And swallow it whole.
But I can't stand it now,
The absurd weight of heaviness
(life that wants to be life)
That holds down forts and canons,
That pushes hands through sausage grinders,
That causes the cashier to give me
Incorrect change;
I cannot look the other way
(I can barely breathe!)
But instead lift, lift,
Huffing tepid air into dying things.

    which is worse?
