A Hundred Years Old

you were lucky to survive
one hundred years ago
before medicine evolved
and the scourges
rolled the dice
you were so special to have breathed
into lungs strong enough
to still be breathing
feeding oxygen to your blood
in turn, to your brain, your heart muscle
who would have known
that the heart so brave
would beat so incessantly
faster or slower
according to the chemicals commanded
by what your eyes beheld
or by what your tongue tasted
or by what your mind consumed
but that it learned what ache,
what yearning, what pleasure,
what passion it could know
or the loneliness
or the hollow sound
of a lone, low cry
over time the repetition
of love's new glow, old joy
circles around and through
until you realize
that all that matters
is to know
you are guaranteed love
in so many ways
from strangers and friends
lovers and family
someone once held you inside
until you were ready
you took the chance to live
at least to try
how is it we forget
our gift of birth
is a divine miracle
deserving of celebration
each single day of being
the world holding its children
as best she can

happy birthday

Ya know this just means I'm gonna want a poem on my B-Day, too. And yes, it's all about me. I, therefore, nominate you as our B-Day wisher of wells and ringer of bells and burier of hells and teller of tales and shit like that.

what did i ever do to deserve something
so beautiful to be written about me
or even about birthdyas in general
    who are you Felicity
    you seem like you're me
    or i'm you
or we wrote that poem together
    in one heap of sweat
    and hair
    and saliva
