PJ's Current Sound

i can dig the old, dirty sound. but stone's tone is fucking sick nowadays, especially when he gets funky.
as for overall sound being brighter, i think that has to do a lot with us all having great sounding copies of more current shows, as opposed to old boots from back in the day. as someone said, LO2L sounds bright too...the '00 boots would sound brighter if they recorded them better. i think the change came following the no code tour, but especially with Matt at drums for US '98 tour...6/26/98, 8/17/00, 10/8/00, 12/8/02, 12/9/02, 4/25/03, 5/28/03, 6/1/03, 6/3/03, 6/5/03, 6/6/03, 6/12/03, 6/13/03, 6/15/03, 6/18/03, 6/21/03, 6/22/03, 7/12/03, 7/14/03, 10/3/04, 10/5/04, 9/9/05, 9/11/05, 9/16/05, 5/16/06, 5/17/06, 5/19/06, 6/30/06, 7/23/06, 8/5/07, 6/30/08, 8/23/09, 8/24/09, 5/4/10, 5/7/10, 9/3/11, 9/4/11, 10/11/13, 10/17/14, 8/20/160 -
I wish stone would put just a tad more gain back into his tone...starting to sound a little too clean...mikes sound is awesome, although I do wish he would play Yellow Ledbetter on his old school strat and through his clean amp...it has that dirty sound to it and just sounds kinda wierd...I do like the hendrix type effects he throws in from time to time with the rotovibe though...but I think that song just needs to be played bright and really really clean. just like it was when it was released.0

To me, with the last album they put out it was like they came full circle and are finally in a place that they feel comfortable being and I love it.0

Some songs DO sound much better when they play them fastfastfast. Porch is the best example.
On the other hand, some songs should NOT be played that fast. And yes, Even Flow is a good example. The other one is State of Love And trust, but that's just my opinion (people usually like when it's faster than in the old days).0 -

Definitely add SOLAT to that and I'd like to hear the whole of Porch slowed down, not just the intro, just to see how they'd do it.
Bring back Speed Wash though!!!“Do not postpone happiness”

I think the bigger "problem" is that the band plays a lot of songs too hard now. Matt can't seem to play gently. He could never pull off Who You Are, Given To Fly, In My Tree, Pilate, Wishlist, etc with the same dynamics as Jack did; when your drummer's playing too hard, it's difficult for the band to relax into a more gentle vibe. He's great for all the new stuff he helped write, but I think that, for the most part, he really weakens most of the Jack-period stuff. Hail, Hail is almost boring with his playing! I think a lot of it has to do with the drums & heads he's using, too...0

Listening to bootlegs prior 2003, it seems that their live sound is so much happier, and less, for lack of a better word, grungier (only using this word to describe the guitar sound). Even Eddie's voice seems to have lost a lot of angst. I for one love this. Even though they may not possess all the energy they did back in the early days, there's something about their current sound that I think is better than anything I've ever heard from them. Anyone else feel the same?
I have noticed that. I think the 2006 shows are the best because Ed's voice is less grungier.0 -

Actually I think there's something to that. (Fault not being the right word) but if you look back at old videos and say Touring Band 2000, Stone was mainly playing his Les Pauls. Now he's mainly playing his Strats.
Watch Corduroy from TB2000 and compare it to Pic in a Frame...for example.0 -
i think its matts influence.
