Anyone with an ear for good rock music should like LedZep. There is nothing not to like. The rock persona along with the often mythical lyrics, combined with the fact that they had the greatest drummer of all time and one of the top 4 or 5 guitarists of all time. Its rock at its best, and very few before or after have been able to come anywhere near the talent of Led Zeppelin. I know music is subjective and each person has their own taste so i can understand why people dont like them, but you have to respect them.

not to mention robert plant was a fucking rock god!! :D

Speaking objectively for a moment, I think they became far more popular in the States than here in the UK, at least in the first few years of their career. They quickly maximised their earning potential here as a live act (which doesn't always signify mainstream success), and the States was all that was left for them, financially. They filled the hole in the arena circuit left after Hendrix died, and built a hard, and very broad, US fanbase. A mixture of media sour grapes and jealousy in the British music press meant they often got a hard time here, critically speaking, while on the other hand, respected musicians such as Mitch Mitchell justifiably noted that Zep wasn't coming up with musical ideas that hadn't been tried a few years beforehand, at the start of the British blues-rock boom (at which Jimi was the centre when he hit London).

As for Zep's folk-rock side, they were respected by friends and musicians such as Roy Harper and Sandy Denny, but again, among British fans of acoustic music at the time, Page was often seen as uncool in his "borrowing" of Bert Jansch's guitar innovations.

We tend to see Zep now in a narrative of the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal (along with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and the rest), but I don't think their influence on British bands was altogether obvious until after punk and the rise of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Just look at old footage of the Old Grey Whistle Test, and you'll see that whereas US bands such as Montrose would come over to the UK, obviously influenced by Zep, UK acts themselves weren't following their example so much, until the NWOBHM movement. (Pretty ironic, I know, since the movement was trying to characterise itself by toning down the blues-rock characteristics of the early Zep era). Without that happening at the end of the seventies, I don't think the massive success of Knebworth 1979 could have flourished. After that point, you'd get Robert Plant appearing on TISWAS!

    i don't like led zeppelin.............

That's not to say I dislike them. I'm indifferent. I have never really gone out of my way to listen to them, because I never really heard anything that caught my attention.

Robert Plant's vocals are the musical equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.....don't like 'em one bit
In my world everyone is a pony,
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!
  • I'm not a Led Zep fan, either. I appreciate them for their legitimate place in the pantheon of rock, but they aren't my cup of tea. There are a few such band/musicians who I respect, but can only listen to for about ten minutes before I've had enough. Also in this category:

    Janis Joplin
    The Doors
    Jimi Hendrix

Anyone else have this kind of impatience with older bands?

I'm another one that doesn't DISLIKE them but doesn't really LIKE them. I like songs of theirs and I appreciate their musicianship but obviously I prefer The Who. It's just personal taste, the way I might disagree with someone over which is a band's best album.

I've listened to a LOT of rock music and nothing comes close to matching Led Zeppelin for me. I can understand people not getting them, but for me they are the pinnacle that rock music has to offer. GODS!

    Plenty of people, I'm sure.

Me for one. I used to, now I get nothing out of them. Just not my thing anymore. Plant always kind of annoyed me too (sorry eMMi).

is it cause of all those pics I linked to you on MSN? :o

haha, I don't mind and I'm sure you know that. :D

like it's been said, lots of people surely don't like Led Zeppelin. some of my closest friends don't.. and one of them only likes Stairway To Heaven ( ) and that's quite alright by me. I don't think they're insane or anything. they just happen to have worse taste in music than me. ;)

I never thought he was serious. I just thought the way he went off and the interviewer fell for it was fuckin hilarious!

Jack's always been a bit outrageous. He probably just doesn't get interviewed as much as he used to so he made the most of it! ;)
