Conversations getting dull
There's a constant ringing in my ears

    I can see the Stones comparison, but I've never gotten the Dead other than the bands following.

    The only comparison I see with the dead and PJ is the fans. The dead had a hardcore group of fans that followed them on tour. I see that also with PJ fans. Not so much in the music but the loyal fans of each band. :)

    Pearl Jam is a mix of a variety of different bands. For one thing, you're leaving out Neil Young and The Who, two of the band's most important inspirations.

    I agree there is a lot of Stones sound in Pearl Jam's music (which in turn was originally Chuck Berry's first). The Who has an awful lot of the STones in them as well (which would make sense as they are close friends and are both British). I am not sure I see the Dead comparison though.

    A couple of examples:

    "Hard To Imagine" would have been the best song on "Their Satanic Majesties Request" if the stones wrote it and would have fit perfectly on there.

    "Down" sounds very much like it could have been on "Exile on Main Street"

    "Don't Gimme No Lip" would have been a great Keith Richards vocal from the "Some Girls" era

    "Gods Dice" has a "Steel Wheels" feel to it, reminds me of the stones album track "Hold On To Your Hat"
    There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.
