Wouldn't Sigur Ros be 50 times better if they sang in English?

If words had unlimited meaning, then Sigur Ros' music could have meaning to you no matter what language it was in.

Words in general have unlimited meaning in who it pertains to as far as understanding.

But the problem is that it isn't in any language, just a bunch of gibberish. What they're singing is completely meaningless, it's all about the music and the singing is just another instrument.

It's a vocalise. (Something that is sung and has a melody but no words.)

"it's rather a form of gibberish vocals that fits to the music and acts as another instrument"

If they call it gibberish then I can call it gibberish. ;)

I don't understand a word they are saying and I love it. Not being able to understand the words gives each songs its own personal meaning to me. It great, its unique, and I love it.

because I don't care about their music as much from their perspective wouldn't it be wise to serve a larger audience and give themselves a larger impact? Not to be sellouts.. but to give their music meaning without making it cumbersome for the main array of their fans..

and if it just another instrument... why add it at all? I think I could enjoy their music much more without singing at all it makes me wonder every time what they are saying.. and it doesn't even sound good..

( ) , some of Takk... and one song on the new album are sung in Hopelandic, which was made up by Jonsi (the lead singer) as being the stage before actual singing, so he's using his voice as an instrument, which is just absolutely astonishing... it fits the music so perfectly. It's mainly about the instrumentation in this band and the emotional experience you get/feel from the music... as for me, I fucking love this band, their music is just phenomenal and so overwhelming at times, but not everyone's the same.
If I could, think I would give in.

main array of THEIR fans? thats a HUGE assumption... based on this thread alone id say THEIR fans like their music exactly how it is... it makes exactly the impact right now that they want it to... if its not for you then just dont listen to them... there are america bands with a similar sound that you can listen to instead of trying to change sigur ros...

i have yet to hear a convincing argument in this thread for sigur ros singing in english
Music has limited meaning... words have unlimited meaning...
and i agree with whoever said its the other way around... its like "a picture is worth 1,000 words"... id say "a song is worth 1,000 words" too... if you disagree than you should pic up a book instead of listening to music because youre drastically minimalizing the impact music can have!

  • Nobody can even understand WTF he is even saying... That is what turns me off to most of their music... it has good emotion but it means nothing to me in any way... and its not even beautiful (just the language, Not the music)... at some parts the language actually sounds kind of nasty with the german "ch" sound

blah blah blah blah cry cry cry cry whine whine whine whine bitch bitch bitch bitch moan moan moan moan whah whah whah whah

They're actually great musicians...This is coming from someone with a degree in music.
    Shows how little you know.

  • No, i'm right... just think about it...

I did. I thought long & hard. I even meditated. You're very, very wrong.

    No.

    Music goes beyond language....

What I love about them is how accurately they mirror my thoughts and feelings in their sounds.....

It sounds cheesy (but TRUE) music is a universal language.....

  • This is the silliest thread I've read in a long time.

While we're at it, why don't we make all great foreign films and foreign classic novels English as well?

I believe (I may be wrong) that the most frequently spoken language in the world is Chinese. Maybe Pearl Jam should learn chinese to increase their fan base.

not a great analogy my friend as all foreign films usually have subtitles to allow English speakers to be able to follow the movie.. Sigur Ros dont. and if its a foreign classic then that book will have been translated and published in English... but i knew what ye meant ;)

Ed can order the whole menu from his local restaurant... give the guy a freakin break!!!
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I can see why you thought that was my point but the fact is, these classics were written in the mother tongue of the director/author. If we'd ask them to all speak our language we might've got shit, not art.

    Hehe.

But on your point, they could publish Sigur Ros' lyrics in English in their liner notes couldn't they? But they don't.

I tend to think about the words/singing in their songs almost as if it were an additional instrument instead of vocals. If that makes sense.

I don't need to know what he's saying, only that I like how it sounds.

If I knew what he say saying, that would only complicate the listening experience.

I kind of think that Sigur Ros is kind of like Radiohead only without those pesky lyrics. :)
