Alt-Country/Rock. She has a beautiful voice and writes some of the most amazing murder ballads I have ever heard.

I'd be inclined to just say she does straight up country because I don't consider the shit that's being played on the radio to be country at all. When I listen to her, I can hear the good ol country in the music and her vocals.

My friends enemies are my enemies.

    I've never even met her.

I know it is. I'm speaking from experience, of course. I hope your friend has found another lady friend to fill that void...

what the heck is a murder ballad? i love neko's work with new pornographers, they are aamazing. but im leery of her solo stuff becos i loathe country. i also dont care for wilco's early stuff, or jeff tweedy with his alt-country fetish. it's why im not keen on the new album. so i doubt id go for her.

Fuck her music, she's got no soul.

dude, be fair. that is just what women do.
  • Saw her here in the UK towards the end of last year. It was incredible to witness that extraordinary voice coming from a flesh and blood human being.

The New Pornographers are playing three nights in London on 18, 19 & 20 June. Obviously there's another band playing elsewhere in London on the 18th, but the 19th would make for a sweet double-header.
If I knew where it was, I would take you there...

It should be noted that the "country" Neko is often accused of singing is totally different than the garbage that Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, etc. try to pass off as country music. Of course I love early Wilco (all Wilco to be exact), Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams, Uncle Tupelo and pretty much everyone that falls under the whole "alt-country" (God I can't believe I said that...lol) label, so I think she's amazing and could listen to her all day long both with and without The New Pornographers.

Exactly. She's "country" in the same way that Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash are "country" - traditional/Americana that doesn't suck.

Should also note that Mint is reissuing 3 records from Neko's previous bands Maow and Cub:

Back when Neko was a punky drummer and not a Patsy Cline crooner :)

see, i dont like that country any better... ryan adams is so-so to me and early wilco is boring compared to their later accomplishments. i doubt she'd be my cup of tea.

i also dont care for johnny cash or willie nelson. so you guys arent going to have much hope of convincing me her kind of country will be more to my liking ;)

though id still like to know what the hell a murder ballad is.

While at the (phenomenal) Neko show at the Park West last night, I spotted a dude in a Mookie t-shirt! Nice shirt, man! :D
