Stephen Malkmus - Face the Truth

wow......I finally got around to picking up this record.....I'm on about my 6th spin this weekend. It's incredible. I am completely blown away.

I like it better than most of the Pavement records. I think its my second favorite Malkmus project, only behind Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.

Man, if "Freeze the Saints" isnt the greatest pop song ever written......well, I don't know what is.

    It is really good better than the first one, although I liked that one as well. Nice and weird, good tunes. Maybe you will like Architecture in Helsinki to me it is comparable to Face the truth.

    I like Stephen Malkmus solo better than I like Pavement. I had some trouble finding a good record from Pavement I heard a few and didn't like it at all, But I kept hearing about them so I never really could let it go. Now I have Wowee Zowee. That one is pretty good. Know any others from Pavement that are like Wowee zowee?

    I don't know the other solo thing from Malkmus, Crooked rain. Can you tell me something about it?

    Wowee Zowee is in its own league as far as Pavement records go. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain was the second Pavement record. It is really wierd, and is better than S & E overall. (IMO) It has a lot of classic Pavement songs (Gold Soundz, Cut Your Hair, Range Life, Silence Kit.) It's a great record. You should check it out.

    Face the Truth is an excellent record. Malkmus has been putting out some great solo music. If you're wanting to get into Pavement, I recommend getting the newly remastered/repackaged (w/ shit loads of bonus demo/live/unreleased material) versions of Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Both are pretty much lo-fi '90's masterpieces. That and a few GBV records. I gotta say Pavement and GBV were probably the two best lo-fi bands to emerge from the late '80's/'90's. just my opinion.

    A thank you. Now I know them. Guess that's what you get when you're not into all that initial stuff. hahaha.
    Freeze the saints is nice but I would have to go with It kills and Baby c'mon.

    there's the self titled, pig lib, and Face the truth

    I know Pig Lib and Face the truth, I reckon you mean there is an earlier solo album that is self titled. Is that right?
    From when?
    Is it anything near these two albums?

    finally some GBV love.

    one of the greatest bands of all time. Pollard is a genius.

    I'm sure all of you already know it, but GBV are an all-timer for me.

    the only problem with GBV is they have a relatively low good song to garbage ratio.

    But with their prolificy, it doesn't really matter.

    I love all three of his CDs post-Pavement. The SM debut I like the best followed by Pig Lib and then FtT respectively. Pink India, Animal Midnight, and No More Shoes are my faves from each one.

    Steve Malkmus is a VERY good guitar player and he has one of my most favorite voices in rock...that nasely sound at the peak of Summer Babe --'Not here, babe....!!!'

    I recommend to any fan of Malkmus or Pavement to buy the Slow Century DVD. Very in-depth -- made w/ the true fan in mind.

    ahh you're killing me.

    I think I am one of the few that absolutely LOVES pretty much everything Pollard releases. (with some exceptions - Nightwalker, all that noise rock stuff)

    GBV had an incredible run in the nineties. They put out like 9 masterpiece records in a row, as far as I'm concerned. That is quite a feat.

    Bob's new solo effort is pretty ambitious, and I love every minute of it.

    The man just doesn't stop. He's already got another solo record ready to roll next fall called Normal Happiness. Apparently it will be a straight up, two minute pop songs record. I've heard about 4 or 5 of the songs live, and I'm really looking forward to it.

    He's also one of the coolest guys in rock. He is quite a character on and off the stage.

    Hey StoneG82 I bought Guided by voices. I always wanted to give them a second chance I once listened to Alien Lanes which you think is really good, that was the one that didn´t do it for me. I now listened to and bought Mag earwhig I noticed that you don´t put that one under the masterpieces. How come? I really like it.

    I like that one a lot.....I dont list it as a masterpiece because it was a totally different band than the old classic line up of GBV that I love.

    it was basically after Bob and the whole band broke up, he got another local band called Cobra Verde to back him up. They were nothing compared to the classic line up, although the guitarist, Doug Gillard, would end up staying with him until the end.

    It's a great record, don't get me wrong....it was just not up there with the others.

    Anyway that Alien lanes album almost throw me off. I am curious why I didn't like it. Maybe I started listening with the wrong idea, or I had a type of music in mind that I wanted to buy that day.
    I really like this one though and I'm glade I didn't write them off. I will listen to that Alien lane album again in the futre to see why I didn't like them.

    Definitely give Alien Lanes a chance. Its one of their best records, and was my favorite for a while.
