  • like all their albums it took me awhile to get into it, but i like most of it.

i love the weird first third, and the more classic MMJ third third, but the middle fucking sux. Sec Walkin' had to be made because of a lost bet or something. or maybe they were trying to make art out of the lowest form of 70's pop/country.

i'm not complaining though. i love their craziness

MMJ isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I might just have to buy this album for "I'm Amazed" alone. I'm simply amazed by that song. (see what I did there?) The solos in that song are pure honey.

The thing is, all the other songs I've heard of their's is sleepy lite-experimental stuff, which I don't really care for at this summery point in time. I hear their earlier stuff is more rock-oriented, though... should I check that out?

Z doesn't contain a lot of sleepy stuff my friend.......you must be listening to the wrong tunes. 'Gideon' is amazing off that one. BTW, 'Aluminum Park' and 'Remnants' off this new one will rock your ass off too.

But to answer your question, yes, their earlier stuff will be more southern rock.

be warned though, that their first two albums are much different than the live performances of those songs tend to be. they are generally more acoustic in nature and softer (and slower). just a heads up. the first two albums are my favorite of the four that have been released so far (as i won't listen to evil urges until it's release date). but i don't want you to go get them expecting a loud, southern rock record. they just simply are not that. it still moves is the closest you'd get to that sound, i'd imagine.
  • just get Okonokos. thats my answer for everything.

Exactly. Nothing sums up My Morning Jacket better than a 2 disc live show.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

They put on a hell of a show too... Other than the 3 times I saw them open for PJ, I saw them headline in Philly and it was probably the best show I've ever seen (other than Pearl Jam of course).

I think "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part II" is the best song on the new album... but then again I've only listened to each song once or twice... I'm Amazed is great, Remnants, Evil Urges, Librarian are all REALLY good... and they all have a different sound... thats what I love about this band!

I have to agree though... "Sec Walkin" is very fucking weird!!!

not a good first impression- albeit MMJ is not a easy listen first time usually for me. JJ's voice sounds different to me on this record, almost like he is trying to sing a different way on purpose. Maybe just the production who knows. If I wanted an experimental album I'd have bought the demos, I am saying 2.5/5 stars. Not a real rocker, and it has the Metallica St. Anger gag factor going on the first listen. A lot of songs- a bonus, I agree the middle is weaker than the outer edges.

did not care for the first three that much-

I'm amazed was the first song I really dug first time through.
    nice classic rock feel

Thank you too- where is the elevator?

Sec walking---is that fucking Christopher Cross singing sailing?
this song...least favorite so far, elton john in the background vocals??

Two Halves- Who the hell is singing!!! This is not JJ!!

Librarian- nice folksy sound, actually liked this one, like Gideon's cousin or something. A little creepy stalker vibe going though

Look at you- at least it sounds like JJ finally

Al. Park- finally a song with some screams and guitar! more of a previous MMJ sound to it

Remnants- GUITAR ROCK FINALLY, liked this song first listen
I may actually buy this album now, this song will ROCK hard live

Smokin- like this one too, nice buildup, some twang for us, another song that will kick ass live

Touch me- weird, it is like an atari porn music sound at first, then turns into Twilight zone from Golden Earing, then a pretty nice song begins, back to atari keys. JJ being JJ finally. Nice road tripping song

take out a few duds and a pretty nice record.

LOL yeah I get what you mean by "atari porn music." But I absolutely love this song!!! Oh wait, do you mean Part I or Part II... because Part II is the one I'm speaking of... Part I is a dud IMO.

Highly Suspicious -- is that Prince singing? another dud.

But I LOVE songs like Remnants, Librarian (is that John Lennon singing?), I'm Amazed, Aluminum Park (reminds me of It Still Moves, IMO their best album).

Yes there are definitely a few duds on this album, but it is still a very good listen. Probably not as good as Z or It Still Moves, but those are two amazing albums to benchmark yourself against.

sounds more like prince to me... I listened to it once a while back, then put my new Jack Johnson album back on...
    I liked z better.

Defintely, Highly Suspicious and Evil Urges have a "Prince quality" to them...

But the rest of the album?

  • I'm a really big MMJ fan and I'm enjoying this album. A lot.

The only song I'm having difficulty getting into is The Librarian.

Smokin' from Shooting is awesome... among many others. The softer songs on this album took me a few listens to get into, but I love them. They seem to be a cross between the more electronic direction the band took with Z and their earlier stuff (i.e. At Dawn).

I would recommend listening to At Dawn before you make any serious judgment on the slower songs.

The Librarian is one of my favorites! Then again, when I listened to the song last night for the first time I was in a different "state of mind" which makes everything sound different...

I agree that this album takes a lot of direction from Z and their earlier stuff...
