Pearl Jam hard rock?
I find when some people hear Im a big PJ fan some act or say...thats pretty hard rock. I have never viewed PJ as hard rock....am I wrong? The band only has so many song that are hard....I definately dont see it as hard rock or metal music.......hell even my 60 year old father is turning into a PJ fan.
Do you get this reaction? And is it right in your opinion?
I dont care how people view my musical tastes....but the fan in me feels those people have missed out by labeling them.

I think of them as classic rock. I don't like it when I down load PJ into my music player and it automatically comes up Rock/Pop. I hate pop so I remove that part.A real possibility I may meet you in my dreams ~ I go to sleep0

Pearl Jam are punk influenced classic rock with an undertone of 1970s heavy metal.0

I haven't got that reaction as much as 'oh that's one of the Seattle grunge bands, right?' I think no matter what they do as a group, certain people will always associate their music with this 'movement.'
Recently I was playing Live at the Gorge in my house and my parents came home and my dad asked, 'who is this?' When I said it was Pearl Jam he looked very surprised and said, 'wow, I actually like this.'
As far as I'm concerned Pearl Jam is ROCK n' ROLL music...and they are one of the few older (wow, that sounds weird) bands that is keeping this form of music alive.Hartford 06

yea i would say that's a pretty acceptable way to describe PJ in a very general way. sure, there are all kinds of songs that could be put into other categories such as punk, folk, grunge, whatever, but for the most part PJ is hard rock.Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load.0

definitely a hard rock band
at least in my mind
but more appropriately-best rock band on the planet0 -
I would classify 5 of their 8 studio releases as hard rock.Idaho's Premier Outdoor Writer

I was getting my Ed poster framed yesterday at Hobby Lobby and a lady standing next to us said..."Who is that?" I said "Eddie Vedder from pearl jam", and another lady said "It is a classic rock band." It caught me off guard. I remember listening to classic rock stations all my life with...The Beatles and Zeppelin and Dylan..and then they started playing U2 and more recently The Black Crowes. I feel kind of old now...thinking that these stations will be playing Pearl Jam soon. I am not sure that I am ready for this realization that so much time has passed. I am almost 30...but, vividly remember how it felt the first time I heard PJ..and how it felt to be 13 years old in 93..Is it really time for a Pearl Jam song introduction on a classic rock station to say "Here is a blast from the past"...?
If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this0 -
I do feel out of the loop sometimes because I am 21 and have recently gotten into them (2005). And when you sit here and talk to people who have been fans since you were 5 it really blows you away. That anything can have as big of a following as Pearl Jam does. I think you can put them in many categories, because they all come from such diverse backgrounds and influences. From Stevie to Townsend. They're extremely addicting, and in a way a small religion for all of us.0

i just call it good music0

couldn't have said it better myself. punk fuckin rockTour with fucking NOFX0 -
wouldn't call them hard rock. Sure they have a decent amount of heavy songs, but the band itself certainly isn't hard rock. I consider them classic rock now. Hell I even consider them somewhat of a hippie/jam band just because they are so incredible live.5/28/06, 6/27/08, 10/28/09, 5/18/10, 5/21/10

The classic rock stations in Maine/NH have been playing PJ for a few years now. Its the only 90's "grunge" band I hear on these stations too.
Gotta say it was a great day when in heard them played there.0 -
Hard rock - yes
Metal - no0 -
I wouldn't say hard rock... I would just say 'rock' is just fine. They do have some hard songs but it's not a large portion of their catolog.
I also don't consider them classic rock either, not yet at least. I have heard Alive and Even Flow on a classic rock station though... but then again I heard a Staind song on there too.Stone Gossard...riffmeister extraordinaire!
I am a man, I am advanced.....I am the first man to borrow Stone's leather pants!0 -

That's pretty much a perfect description if you ask me. Definitely not hard rock, FAR from straight up punk...and, yeah....good call. That's how I will describe them from now on.0
