Extending my apologies to one Michael McCready

After the 2006 tour, I began saying that I had thought that Mike's playing had gone down hill. In particular on extended bridges like Evenflow and Porch. I complained about him holding one note or messing with distortions instead of doing what he does best: playing. I thought he was still good, but hardly what he was in 2000.

I was never so wrong in my life. He was so on fire in DC and the first MSG show. I was amazed. It was really the Mike McCready of old. I was on the floor straight away from him...first seat on the aisle...perfect view of every note. He spoke to me with his guitar ya know. He said, "Steve, shut the hell up. I'm still the man. I always was the man. and that's why you've been obsessed with my guitar playing for over 10 years now."

I heard ya loud and clear, Mike. My apologies.

Mike does mess around a lot with his effects these days, but I love that aspect of his playing. I like listening to all the sounds he chokes out of his Strat during RVM, or during the E-Flo solo ... That being said, I agree, sound effects are no substitute for just playing ... They should compliment it. I think this tour, and 2006 as well, he's nailing the right balance.

I wouldn't say I underestimated him. I just never have heard him sing or contribute vocals. it was like if Jimmy Page took a vocal. the crowd would be like "what the hell is even going on here?" it was cool.

I'm sure he was devastated that a guitar virtuoso like yourself would be critical of his playing.
