Are you on the progressive side? List you 10 favourite prog-rock/art-rock albums here and discuss them.

My 10 favourite are (in no particular order):

1. YES - "Close to the edge"
2. YES - "Fragile"
3. Genesis - "Selling England By the Pound"
4. Santana - "Abraxas"
5. Santana - "Santana III"
6. Marillion - "Script for a Jesters tears"
7. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood"
8. RUSH - "2112"
9. King Crimson - "In the Court of the Crimson King"
10. Genesis - "The lamb lies down on Broadway"

Hmmm... now I wished that I named the list "40 favourite prog-rock albums" instead of "10 favourite....". I want to include more Genesis, RUSH, Yes, Santana, King Crimson and some early Pink Floyd ....

    "Brain Salad Surgery" can be overlooked......it fits better in a specific period of time......"Red" transcends its original time period. It almost has a timeless quality about its sound. I think that "Red" has probably had a greater influence on new music over the years. (I own both a vinyl copy and the nice re-mastered/soft packaged CD editon of "Red." I suspect that I have had the vinyl copy around 20 years.)

    I was really tempted to throw all the live releases from King Crimson that document the 1972-74 version of the band. Collections such as "The Great Deceiver" and "The Nightwatch-Live at Amsterdam." The first Genesis box set with the live version of "The Lamb" is also to die for........:)

    ummm I don't listen to a lot, but my favourites that I have would probably be:

    ELP - ELP
    King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
    Rush - 2112
    Yes - Fragile
    Ram - Where? (In conclusion)

    But yeah, don't listen to a huge amount of it, really

    No way are mahavishnu orchestra prog rock. Pure jazz-fusion dude! Also is birds of fire good? I have Inner mounting flame and it is stunning.

    i was a head music freak in the 70s (i hate the term prog rock. we called it head music and later, art rock)

    The way I see the genre, you can't really remove anything by Yes through Relayer or by Genesis Tresspass through Trick of the Tale (one of the most underrated art rock albums ever) and have a good list. So I'll just leave those alone and concentrate on the others

    I was thinking about others but that would mean going over 10.

    Outside the 10 I'd include albums by Kansas, Alan Parsons Project and some others.

    Anyway, I enjoyed Marillion a lot, but I wanted Genesis and I liked Rush, but wanted Yes.

    In newer music, I have to include Tool Aenima & Lateralus, NIN - the Fragile, and for Porcupine Tree, I favor Deadwing over In Abstensia (although I really enjoy that one too)

    Finally someone who listed Jethro Tull - I couldnt sleep last night because I forgot "Heavy Horses" on my list ....
    I saw Tull and Yes live on a festival here in Sweden two years ago .. believe me, they still perform fantastic live acts.

    i'm not REALLY into prog (i guess being a child of the 90's has something to do with that) but some of the best IMO are dream theater's "images and words" and tool's "aenima" alongside pink floyd's "dark side of the moon".

    I would reccommend "Larks' Tongue in Aspic" and "Red" from the third distinct version of the band.

    All three albums from the 1980s version of the band are excellant. ("Discipline," "Beat," and "Three of a Perfect Pair."

    Of course, the first album is a good listen.

    Just a tip from me: the other night I watched sunday night baseball (Dodgers-Giants) and listened to Jethro Tull during the whole game. It was a suprisingly good combination...

    Jazz, Rock, Eastern...the fusion was absolutely progressive in the late 60's early 70's. They weren't comping Miles tunes. :)

    BOF is awesome. I saw those guys a looooooong time ago....john mclaughlin asked for a moment of silence before they began.....after about 10 seconds, some drunk yelled “LET’S ROCK!!!!”.....billy cobham was the drummer, if I remember.
