God it's as if Layne is speaking to himself. Bone chilling song.

    Indeed.

"For little peace from God you plead, and beg"
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • One of the greatest songs of all time...it really is.

Amazing song! I remember just driving around and around late at night, just listening to this song over and over when I first got "ABOVE."

The most frightning thing about the song is that Layne knew he had a serious problem and wanted more than anything to kick the habit. However, addiction is a disease and some people's bodies just are unable to cope without the drug they are addicted to. Too bad, the very thing he wanted to wake up from ended up killing him 7 years later.

Heroin also killed "Baker" the bass player on the record too, I belive even before Layne passed away.

It really is one of the best songs ever.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got Above, then I heard Wake Up and was hooked.
  • A true gem....probably one of my favorite Layne songs. Vocals are chillingly soulful.
  • I still find it diffucult to listen to any of Layne's work without getting a little creeped out. A lot of his work was so dark and seemingly prophetic. Don't get me wrong, I think he was a phenomenal talent. Maybe some day I'll be able to listen again.

    Amazing song!

Love Mikes work on it as well
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Listening to it now! I have always liked this song. Such originality and emotion from Layne. One of the great modern frontman. So sad it ended the way it did.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

When Layne sings, I feel as though he's telling me to wake up from whatever is bothering me.
  • One of my favourite songs of all time. It just builds and builds and hits you where it counts.

    One of my favorite songs...........

Check Live at the Moore, but I gotta say, for this song, there's something about him being all alone and confined in the tiny, soundproof vocal booth that adds to his performance on the studio version. When he's live, with fans singing along and cheering, it loses something.

I hear ya. The studio version is the best. Because he is alone, just like the song.

great song. layne sings about how he needs to "wake up" from his addiction to heroin. he refers to his drug use as a "love affair" that has to go and how for 10 long years he has a lot of "leaves to rake up." he knows heroin is a bad idea and tries to convince himself not to do it.
