Joy Division

I was just listening to The Wombats song "Let's Dance to Joy Division" and it dawned on me I know the name but I'm not sure I know the music. Can somebody recommend a Joy Division album or two for me to start my musical journey?
I’ve seen Pearl Jam 25 times, Eddie Vedder 9 times, and Brad once.

you might want to pick up substance or permanent,
they are both joy division compliations and both are pretty goodWe did not change as we grew older; we just became more clearly ourselves.0 -
i agree with getting 'substance'Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load.0

Do not get Substance first because you may be disappointed.......get Closer and Permanent. This has become one of my favorite bands since I got into them a few years back. I would love to name songs but they just have so many great songs. Still is a collection of unreleased songs and such and even that is basically flawless. I might have to listen to them now tonight.Alpine Valley 2000

I recommend Substance, Unknown Pleasures, and Closer to start. You see me empty, Sir, do not pause and inquire, simply assume and refill.

I literally just watched the Joy Division documentary that came out.
I got into Joy Division a couple years back and they are incredible. Unknown Pleasures and Closer are their only 2 albums, but they have a bunch of singles and whatnot that you'd want. If I were you I'd get both albums and one of the compilations mentioned (permanent or substance).
I have a box set called "heart & soul", it contains everything the band ever did, including live recordings. Not sure if you'll be able to find that very easily or not.
I agree with the pjoasisrule, after you start getting into this band you'll find out they pretty much never wrote a bad song.
Also, check out the recent Joy Division documentary, and also the movie "Control".0 -
I would go with the two official releases, Closer or Unknown Pleasures. What's nice is those two, plus Still were just re-released last year as deluxe packages with two discs, including additional tracks and a live show. they were released on vinyl as well as cd. good stuff.0
