Pretty much what his all boils down to is you using a 35 year old definition of the term. Just because they were considered metal then does not make them metal now, in my view.

Also, Bathory has some good stuff too.

but it is still heavy metal, like it or not, deal with the fact, they dont play as hard or as fast as you may like, but they are and always will be heavy metal.

I don't doubt that they were considered heavy metal in their day. The point I have always had (and haven't articulated very well) is that I don't consider them heavy metal NOW. It is a subtle difference. Trust me, I know the history of metal, but I am kind of arguing something different.

that you are, and thats the great thing about opinions, mines different to yours, and thats cool.
However if this was a hundred + years ago, i would of had to gone a crusade and killed all the people who didnt think like i do ( yay religion :p)

I totally agree with you that, they dont sound like anything today, and that if they were playing today it would be considered more "hard rock" then anything more metal.

  • I suggest people keep away from this rock sub-genre. Stick to classic rock. Casue it's better.

Led Zeppelin are not heavy metal. Maybe they were, but they are not anymore. Jimi Hendrix was considered heavy metal as well, even more than Zeppelin.

Even if Zeppelin is a metal band, why mention them?
    a)everybody knows them

b)imagine the shock when they listen to Zeppelin, thinking its metal, then listen to Slayer

c)They are prolly not even a top 50 metal band.

    d) if Zeppelin is metal they need to expand the metal bin at most music stores

Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix- blues based rock bands

early Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead, Black Sabbath-heavy metal

I just listened to Opeth for the 1st time the other day. They rock. I love how they go from acoustic super chill mode to super distorto raucous mode.

I'm pretty sure that nobody ever considered Jimi Hendrix to be a heavy metal artist. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are generally credited with the creation of the heavy metal genre. They are heavy metal artists. Heavy metal has evolved throughout the years and many believe it peaked in the early to mid 1980s with speed metal (see Slayer and early Metallica). But, saying that Led Zeppelin isn't a heavy metal artist would be incorrect. I would not steer the guy who started this thread in their direction because he is most likely referring to the most common incarnation of "heavy metal" which is is from the 1980's. Just a thought.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

The term "Heavy Metal" was first used in the Steppenwolf song "Born to be Wild". This was it's first incarnation.

It was because of him that the term 'heavy metal' was made. I dont remember the exact quote, but it was used to describe his sound.
