'Ship Song' lyrics and meaning

OK. So I am getting married and I think this would be a great first dance song--I have a perfect recording of Ed doing it in Chicago. The thing is, it feels like a great love song, but I have heard other interpretations. What do you guys think? I don't want to make the same mistake as the guy proposing in Montana and asking the guys to play Betterman. Thanks.

    ship song is a great song to pick for a wedding dance thing..I WAS THINKIN OF DOIN THE SAME......AS for the meaing i think its all good and relative to that day....if you listen and WRITE the words you will see what im talking about.......as for the BETTERMAN THING......IS THAT TRUE????????bahahahahahahaha

    Thanks, think so too. Yeah, sadly, the Betterman thing is true. The boot is great. Eddie kind of laughs in an 'ok, it's your night buddy', then they play it.

    Nick Cave kicks some serious ass! He's like my third favorite performer. The Ship Song is amazing, and I would love to hear this recording of Eddie playing it in Chicago. Is it floating around the web somewhere??

    It's a sad song for a wedding and nick cave has a very sad voice in this one... love nick cave & bad seeds though.. man they can put on a great show!
