Here's a stereo cabinet my dad made in 1964 when he was in high school. Since I have a vinyl collection my parents decided to give it to me. As of right now half the top lifts up, though he's going to covert the front panels into doors and also replace the fabric since it's been stained. I'm very excited to have something he made from scratch.... he thinks it's trash but my mom and I love it.

I think it goes nicely in my place :D

    That looks great.

Yeah Dad's are awesome. Without any training, my dad has added a whole back section to our house, built a new bathroom and laundry. Plus re-do our gardens. And is handy at plumbing, paved, put retaining walls in and has done electrician work.

That is on the weekends. By day he is an office worker. He sounds like a superhero.

    beautiful!
i love pieces with a history, and especially made by your dad....sweet!
i have a gorgeous vintage standup wood radio that was in my mothers house growing up. it's actually in a couple of my parents wedding photos, and my parents were married in 1947. after they married my mother got to keep the radio, and then when she and my dad started their business together, it was in their office forever. when my sister took over the business and then moved it to her home in jersey, the radio went in the building basement. seems all had forgotten about it, except me. i have so many memories of that radio, associated with my parents, visiting their office, etc. i told my mom it was the only thing i wanted of theirs. she said i could have it right there and then since it was just collecting dust in the basement. i moved it into my then apartment within the week. within a month, the basement had flooded, and if the radio was still there....it more than likely would've been terribly damaged, if not ruined enitrely. lucky, lucky. :) it now proudly sits in my LR, first thing you see when you enter my house in fact. 8-)

btw - i think i see IKEA CD racks hanging on your wall? i love those!

i gew up with furntiure like that. a lot of danish modern....mixed with, well....other sutff. :P mom didn't exacly have the greatest taste, but she DID have some beautiful pieces....which of course the beautiful stuff she gave away to family, and the crap she kept. typical.......

also, whenever i see office furniture from the 1950s in films, i ALWAYS think of my parent's office, b/c it is EXACTLY the same! i once saw a metal desk from the 50s, restored, for sale in the restoration hardware catalog for over 1k!!! :o  :o my parents probably had 5 of them! and the chairs to go with em, etc.......woweeeeeeeeeee. of course, all gone now..probably in the trash. :| such is life, eh?

Just kidding, that's a cool cabinet. Perfect for vinyl!

I was trying to tell you about the white (wood) stereo we had in our living room in the early seventies when my mom moved in with her boyfriend and my mouse batteries died earlier.

Is your dad still making woodwork?

He hasn't made furniture in a while but he still loves doing it. I hope that he and I can make something together for my place this summer. I'd love to make something along the same design to hold my records.

That looks a lot like the stereo systems that were popular in the mid-late 60's. My parents met when they were 18 and one of their first purchases together (or it was a wedding gift?) was a GIGANTIC stereo... easily 8 feet long and made out of solid wood.

you don't see those around anymore, nice addition to your home!

    It works, right?

very cool....my grandfather has one and wont give it up:)
funny, last weekend when I rebuilt most of the back porch, my son asked me "how do you know how to do all this stuff?"
