Itunes question...a stupid one I'm sure

I have a stupid question that I'm sure (and deservedly so) will endure some ridicule, but here it goes anyway.

I downloaded the 2 MSG shows that I went to and they are in files on my desktop in the mp3 format. How do I get them into my Itunes library?

I said it was a stupid question!

I use a Mac, Windows might be slightly different. Drag the folder into your iTunes library of songs and release. If that doesn't work, you should have an option to Import from the File drop down menu

I would save your original folder of MP3s however...the iTunes version will not be compatible with other MP3 players (your cell phone for instance).. so saving the originals gives you the flexibility of having both formats

    Hope this helps

Thanks very much - when I get home later I'll give it a try.

    Thanks again.

On Windows, itunes has some options that will affect how you do this. First of all, itunes might be changing your files to aac format (as LongRhode says), but it might not. Check this under Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing, where the Import Using: field should be set to MP3 Encoder. But I believe on Windows, that only applies to new cds, and itunes will not convert files that are already in mp3 format.

Next set of options is under Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General. A check mark in Keep itunes Music Folder Organized means that itunes will rearrange songs into the folder format itunes Music > Artist > Album. I like having it this way but if you are meticulous about your files, you might not. The other option is Copy Files to itunes Music Folder When Adding to Library. I like this option too. It moves the files from your desktop to the itunes music folder. That way it will be easy to move all your stuff at once if you ever need to. Plus I don't like having a lot of stuff on my desktop. I find this option particularly useful because I download torrents to a different folder and then import them into itunes later, so the finished files are moved out of the torrents folder to where they belong.

Post again if you have any more questions. You could also burn a data disc backup of the mp3 files in case you ever have computer trouble.

file > add folder to library.

browse to the MSG folder and import it.

another easy way is to open up the folder, select all the mp3's and then drag them into the itunes library window... that will drag them into your player.

Fairly simple and no, iTunes doesn't convert your mp3's to AAC automatically. That's optional and you have to do it yourself.

For convenience sake, move your MSG boots to your normal music file (My Music or your iTunes folder...whichever)

In iTunes: File > Add Folder to Library > select the file to add

Should be that simple. Make sure they're unpacked or extracted (zip file, rar file)!

Thanks Dunkman, I totally forgot to mention that part. All the options I mentioned control what happens when you add the folder to your library. I like to let itunes move them automatically.

Thank you everyone for all of your help. With the help of my son, I got them into Itunes and am burning onto Cd's for my car.

    Thank you again.

Oh if you had said you have a son, the answer would have been "ask him to show you". ;-)

Anyone see the Verizon commercial spoofing the first day of school where the kids are reminding the parents of the different ways to use their phones before they get in the car and ride off? It's so true. Not that parents can't figure this stuff out, just that it's easiest to learn new technology by having someone show you, and odds are that the kids have already learned how from their friends.

for someone to bring that up! I was doing my best not to ask him for help (I was making copies for him as well - he was with me at both shows) but between all of your help and his little bit of help it all worked out.
