My 11 year old daughter was ALL broken up and in tears this morning over the death of her 8 and half year old fish. :( I was told they were only going to live five years max but they both surpassed that and her other fish died last year.

All I could tell her was it lived a long life and that life has come to an end, I told her Iknow we feel sad now but we must move forward.

I made her favorite breakfast, steamed crackers and after swim practice today I'll take her to dinner. She wants a full burial in the backyard this evening.

Peace

A nice burial ceremony is a good idea and going out to get another pet usually helps too. :)

We've gone through this a few times now. After the last hamster died we decided to get some little pets that live longer. We bought some Guinea Pigs that are supposed to live up to 8 years.

Good luck with the funeral tonight. :)

Its sad but also the way most children learn to understand death and passings. Although at 11, your daughter is probably pretty spohisticated from TV and movies. We had a 3yo bearded dragon lizard that died when my daughter was about 6 or 7. She cried over that. She never cared about the fish though--they could come and go--and we have always had a tank. Kids are interesting that way.

I've had two fish die by suicide. Sounds strange, but the fish just jump out of the water and I found them on the floor after work.

My daughter was devistated at the time. We buried them in the back yard. They were Patrick and Gary. Poor little guys. She has a turtle now and will never get anymore fish.

Take special care of her today. She'll remember that you were there for her.

    aw :(
reminds me of that episode of the Cosby show when that happened and they had a funeral and flushed the fish down the toilet (not trying to make a joke), that's what they did. It was a sweet episode

well but anyway I'm sorry about the fish :( I'm a Pisces :(

Oh that's so sad but I'm amazed that fish lived so long! I can understand why she is upset... she had that fish the majority of her life. That's really tough. I hope she feels better soon.

Well, I just put her off to bed and we did say goodbye to her pet fish *Buddy* this evening. We buried him in the backyard under a flowering tree for shade. We both said a prayer, she wrote two poems and we played a tribute to *Buddy* a song by our favorite guitarist Joe Satriani called *Always With Me, Always With You*

I plan on getting her a new pet, she would like a dog for her birthday this summer. I'm glad she's finally sleeping peacefully just without her companion *Buddy* :(

    Peace

    PS I'm a Pisces too, 3/10

Out of curiosity, what kind of fish was it? It sounds like it lived a long and good life at 8 1/2 years.

I hope your daughter is doing better.

Just a goldfish with some special name that grew in size. We were for a couple years over feeding them till we learned they only needs to be fed once a day.

BTW she was still crying this morning, but she knows how to work on her Dad. I going to have to buy two more on Monday, I guess she doesn't like to look into her somewhat empty tank (she still has a small frog in there).

Steamed crackers are these thick water crackers from Jamaica and you basically steam them in water for about 30 seconds. She loves them and they're not bad. Yum!

UPDATE...I bought my daughter a new larger tank with some exotic tropical decorations. Then we went back and bought 4 new fishes named...

    Jack (Black)......He's all black

    Little Larry.....He's spotted

    ?????.............He's all gold coloured

    and Casper....He's all white

I get daily reports as to what they're up to, they're tiny now but I know they won't stay that way.

The tank so pretty I told her leave her door open so when I passed I can take a look see. She's very happy now, Man what a lucky child. :)

These crackers are cracklin hard on each bite so steaming them brings them down to a soft chew. Just add a little butter and it's yum, yum good. My mother made for her once and now I have to cause it's quick/easy to make in the mornings.

I know, when I told the cashier at Pet Smart they were amazed too. It's so long ago I don't remember where I bought those fishes but the store I bought them from said those gold fishes live about 4-5 years max. In that fifth year I prepared her but they kept going and going until one died last year then this year.

when my sons budgie (gherkin) died we had to bury him in the front garden. I had dug a hole all ready, and Riley insisted on carrying gherkin out, but kept saying 'are you sure he's really dead?? what if he's just sleeping? i'll just check his heartbeat' ... feels on the budgies chest with his fingers, and listens for a little beat.
    it was so sweet
then he couldn't bring himself to put dirt on him, so i had to cover him with a little bit of straw first.

a new pet does help. We got a new budgie - pickle :)

but i dread to think what will happen when the dog dies.
    impatience is a gift ........
