I disagree about white being a better accompaniment. The rules of white with seafood and chicken and red with meat is outdated.
There are so many different types of red wine.
A Pinot Noir is perfect with sushi.
Because of the clean tastes of sushi, it can even handle something a bit spicier and heavier.
Agree, Pinot Noir compliments many dishes, One of my fav's.

    Fave combo-

Internet message boards and people on them who correct others' grammar and spelling mistakes.

Yeah, yeah - I actually hate that myself and usually avoid it, but this one was just begging it.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

I will partially agree...red wine can be very versatile.

But with regards to sushi, it's a very delicate food. Hence the use of ginger to cleanse your palette between bites if you so choose. Even a mild red like a pinot noir can overpower a light fish.

I think the old "white wine with seafood" deal is still very true for delicate flavors like a real fresh yellowtail or scallop. Something like a deep seafood stew or red sauce with clams is a whole different story altogether. And I also think red goes much better with the typical red wine foods like steak, chicken and pasta. A light white wine will lose all of its finer points if mixed in with any of the above. A nice bitey merlot or cabernet or shiraz will hold its own.
