:( I didn't mean it like that... but you seem to believe that I should believe something that (in your own words) 'would be boring to explain on a news show'
No, I don't expect you to believe it. I just believe it myself because I can't be bothered to spend the time to do the proper scrutiny of the research. It's a well researched field and any bad research is knocked down quite fast. Comes a point where I have to trust, no one's an expert in everything.

I think buying of carbon credits for individuals is more of a ethical thing to make hippies feel better about themselves.

why would anyone want to buy carbon?:D

    here's what i know.
like all things climate is cyclic.
i feel the sun hotter. is this global warming or is this a natural 'aberration'.
i do not believe mankind has been around long enough to know whether what we are experiencing is the natural run of things or something more. however...
i can not discount that man's activities do not have some sort of effect on global climate patterns. fortunately being an australian i was born with the innate ability to swim so if the sea levels rise i'll be okay. :p:D

I agree completely. I think all this stuff scientists come up with is just a load of equations that they can prove mathematically... doesn't always mean it applies though! Sorry fowls :o

So even if you buy/trade carbon credits, aren't you still using up fossil fuels and emitting the by-products? I guess I don't get it... or is it Al Gore who doesn't get it?

I think a few ppl here should be taking environmental science classes.
If you want to be freaked out and get gloomy.
    Sign up for some classes.
    Fucking scary shit.

Example of something I learnt yesterday.

The A bomb = atomic bomb
    is 700 times weaker than
the H bomb = hydrogen bomb

Hydrogen explosions happen on the sun and in stars. Countries/scientist have set off H bombs on far off lone deserted islands. We all know this right? The islands are disintegrated. This means atoms, molecules, protons, and neurons or whatever are changed. Their are now new atoms and such that never existed until the island/islands were vaporized.

Such catastrophic events would cause some weather changes globally, I am sure of it and I am the farthest thing for a scientist.

But by educating themselves they wouldn't be anywhere near as humorous. I love it when people second guess the science and knowledge of people with three times the raw intelligence and 10 times the actual education on a given subject.

of course we all know this... but how do we 'know' this? Cos we're TOLD... we're told it by people who we probably couldn't relate to at a dinner table... by people who, for all we know, are from a different planet to us. They can offer up as much 'proof' as they like... but I don't know these people and their 'proof' means nothing to me so I choose not to believe them.

And eyedclaar, what the hell is 'intelligence' anyway?

Must... resist...obvious...comeback...to...that...question. Phew, that was hard.

Look, I consider myself a smart and educated person. However, I know when I'm in over my head with certain subject matter. Intelligence is realizing that there are people out there who are smarter than you and waaaaaaay more educated. Granted, you probably know more than other people about certain things but I think I'll lean towards trusting the experts when it comes to scientific knowledge.

I love it when my aformentioned Wyoming in-laws try to tell me (still) that globabal warming is a hoax. They say the same thing about evolution. You know, I might actually take the time to cosider their perspective if they had read a book in the last 20 years.

Absolutely... but I think many of us have different interpretations of intelligence. My cousin's a member of mensa but she has no idea how to interract with people or society! But yet she knows stuff that I haven't even heard about.

I dunno... I just find that science is only understood by a select group of people... and the rest of us pretty much have to take their word for it? Of course some sciences are for the greater good... but many are 'unethical' for want of a better word... so I dunno why I need to believe every word they tell me.

I'll give them the common sense stuff... but why do I need somebody to TELL me what I can figure out for myself? I think there are different levels of intelligence and just cos I choose not to blindly believe what I'm told (how is it different to religion?) doesn't make me stupid.
