Are you Right or Left 'Brained'?

This is fucked up, but pretty damn cool. Dont know if you guys have seen this (didnt search the forums) but check it out:

http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,22492511-5005375,00.html?from=mostpop

First glance, I'm right brained (which is not what I'd thought I'd be), but after a few minutes of staring at the dancer and reading the page, the thing was fucking flipping on me (fuckin' flippers right speedy?). CW, CCW, CW, CCW - its like a magic trick.

And our buddy Andrew Sullivan gets philosophical:

It usually shows right brained for me at first look. But I can immediately see it the other way if I try.

Right, though I manage to get it the other way by reading something and quickly looking back at the picture (but the description doesn't work, I'm logical and good at IT, maths and Science and absolutely not creative unfortunately).

Frankly, until i get a full explanation of how it's supposed to work, I'd say it's random.

Right. I saw clockwise. Then I focused on the shadow below, looked back up and saw counter-clockwise and could not get clockwise back for a while.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

Freaky. I can't get it to go counter-clockwise no matter what I do... do I even HAVE a left brain???
I smile, but who am I kidding...

I only saw "left" which made sense after reading the descriptions. :)

She couldn't spin any faster clockwise if she tried. How do I get her to go even a little bit counter???

If you stare at the standing leg, after a minute or two, she does appear to change rotation.
  • nick1977nick1977 Posts: 327
I seem to switch back and forth on demand.
  • I can get her to bounce back and forth repeatedly without completing a full revolution.

What helps was to scroll down and look at her ankles first, then use the reflection of her feet to change directions. Once you can do that easily, scroll up and focus on her feet again if needed.

    Pretty trippy. Thanks for that.

im the same way. i cannot for the life of me see how it could possibly turn counter-clockwise. but it makes sense. the right brain description fits me much better than left.

*edit* it suddenly changed on me. and as i watched it, it randomly changed again. i'm pretty sure the graphic changes and it has nothing to do with what half of the brain you're using.

this is just odd. my twin brother sees it one way and I see it the other.

I see it going clockwise. yet I feel I am 100% more towards the left brain then the right. (according to that list)

    It's bullshit.

I can see it both ways and flip back and forth. But I have experience with Necker Cube like illusions.

Initially I saw it spinning counter-clockwise, but then I saw it spinning clockwise for a considerable amount of time before making the conscious effort to switch it back. This suggests that I am Right-Brained? I think Angelica would strongly disagree.

I thought the exact same thing. At first I thought he image was programmed to change randomly, but It's 100% legit. You can make her change back and forth at will.

One of the cooler illusions I've seen.

Which side of the brain... I dunno...

A better trick to determine right/left brain. Hold your hands together, as if you were praying and overlap your thumbs. Look at your hands.

Left thumb is below the right thumb = left brain
Right thumb is below the left thumb = right brain

We are all whole-brained. This left-right dichotomy is rather misleading.

I think what you say is true.

I first saw the dancer turn counter clockwise, began reading the "left-brain right-brain" columns to the left, looked back, and she was going clockwise. And stayed that way.

everytime i "clear it" (like look away completely or go back to the webpage after some time), that chick is always spinning clockwise. i can get her to spin the opposite direction when i focus, but my initial view is always clockwise.

is this the same for everyone else? or does it alternate for anyone else?

The same thing happens with the classic necker cube. But the cube doesn't rotate. I'm interested in how it's infered that the rotation of the spinning has anything to do with what "brained" we are, and what exactly that means. I have a complete brain with many fibres (corpus callosum) connecting the two halves and my visual system uses both left and right halves of my brain.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_system

I doubt the visual system receives any kind of backpropagation from the logical or emotional parts of our brains, that wouldn't serve any functional purpose and would have been pruned away.

    Got it.
The trick is deciding if her left or right leg is out (or down; either way). It helps to look at it peripherally when you wanna change it.
