Ouch. This sucks.

"China, the world's fastest growing economy, has earned another startling superlative: the highest annual incidence of premature deaths triggered by air pollution in the world, according to a new study.

A World Health Organization (WHO) report estimates that diseases triggered by indoor and outdoor air pollution kill 656,000 Chinese citizens each year, and polluted drinking water kills another 95,600. (Related: "China's Pollution Leaving Mountains High and Dry, Study Finds" [March 8, 2007].)"

Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

China was able to get by for decades with their basic highway/streets infrastructure... why? Bicycles. Bikes don't punish the roads as bad as cars and trucks... especially during the rains.
Now, the roads are getting thrashed because of the cars and trucks... so, what does China do? They resurface the roads, of course. The thing is.. the materials they use... not the best stuff. Especially when it rains and all those toxic materials drain off into... you guessed it... their rivers. Which leads to... you guessed it... our oceans. Whose currents carry it to... you guessed it... our shores.

At least you've still got the beach, Cos. :) Nothing beats the ocean air in the evenings.

One of their biggest problems is the amount of coal they burn for electricity

Not just is it the air there.
I seen a report which was about a farmer
who couldn't grow tomatos in the earth anymore at all.
So he moved his earth/ground farming techniques.
The man had to erect arces after acres of greenhouses
and have some unpolluted soil brought in.
He says it is not just affecting him, it is rampant.
    Holy frickin moly.

If only our own government in the US would take matters to such a level, heh heh....

Well, let's all hope this is the end of the toothpaste, pet food and wheat/rice gluten scare.

China, since the days of Mao, has never been concerned with the environment or their impact on it. As Cosmo mentioned, the explosive growth of private automobiles in that country is as much to blame for this situation as are the factories making our cheap "goods."

We will probably be having a similar discussion soon about India.

    And that sucks even more.
China and India are taking advantage in their "developping countries" status to disregard polution levels. And there's not much we can do about it since we told them to do so.

it's a vicious cycle ... if we want cheap goods, made from cheap labour, with lax standards on worker health and toxic waste ... this is the result ...
