America doesn't exist

No countries really exist. If you take a satellite image of North America, there is no labels on it, those labels are only on maps. Countries only exist because we want to partition ourselves. It's the result of in-group vs out-group hostility.
I'm tired of hearing "Then you hate America" how the hell can I hate a geographical area? I hate that people attribute personality traits and such to the geographical area, that's what I hate.

I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

You can zoom in on that geographical area onto my house. That's the place that if you try to "unlabel it," you get shot. This is called personal property rights.
Same for the U.S. It's ours because we say so.All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

"Conceit, arrogance and egotism are the essentials of patriotism.... Patriotism assumes that our globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who had the fortune of being born on some particular spot, consider themselves better, nobler, grander, more intelligent than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill, and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all others." Emma GoldmanIf you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

We don't need to consider ourselves better than other people to be patriotic. That's a major gaff on Emma's part. All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

Everyday you look at the evening news
What you see is the same old story
Depressing information always hits you in the face
Tell me where, where it ends
People fightin' with their children
Children fightin' with their teachers
People fightin' with each other
We got to compromise
And let the walls come down
That separates you and me
Let the walls come down
We could be livin' in harmony
If we wanna see the future
We gotta stick together right away
They're saving all their guns for a rainy day
Just think about it
Some are black and some are white
Who's wrong and who's right
Let's talk about it
Tear down the fences that keep getting in our way
And let the walls come down
That separates you and me
Let the walls come down
We could be livin' in harmony
If we wanna see the future
We gotta stick together right away
We need communication, love and jubilation
Tear down the fences that keep getting in our way
And let the walls come down
That separates you and me
Let the walls come down
We could be livin' in harmony
If we wanna see the future
We gotta stick together right away

Actually the land, and environment does play a role in shaping our personalities inasmuch in the way that we learn to live within it.

Yes you do. You do it every day. Americans love flying flags all over the place, and even your kids have to pledge allegiance to the flag everyday at school. There's also loads of subtle chest thumping going everyday in your media, whether on the news, or in movies. You may not even always recognize it, but it's there working away every day.0 -

That may be true, but the subtle chest thumping and all the "America is number 1 stuff" strikes me as nationalism more than patriotism. You can be patriotic without the arrogance. It's just not practiced a lot.I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.0 -

how does that show that we think we're *better*.....?
seriously?
flying flags, kids saying the pledge of allegiance, in and of themselves...do not say *we're better*.....simply, patriotism, love of country, where you're from....?
anyway, i agree with the initial premise, NO countries *exist* in the sense the thread starter discusses, but sure....they do exist, like many things of human construct, for good or for bad.
btw - i just dislike sentences that begin with 'yea you do' especially followed by '*you* do it every day'........whether directed at me or anyone else.i don't consider myself or my country *better* than anyone or anywhere else.....we have more in common than not...and i enjoy all the differences in any case.
Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow0 -
