So what does everybody think happened? Did James Earl Ray shoot Martin Luther King Jr.? Or was he framed?? He doesn't seem to fit the profile of someone who would assassinate King. Wasn't he just a thief/robber? Was there any motive given for why he wanted King dead?

HAHA well I feel sheepish. I thought it said JFK. Nevermind!
  • Big fat ole conspiracy.

Here, from wikipedia, just to give the doubters somthing to pick at, lol:
    wiki wrote:
Ray later fired Foreman as his attorney (from then on derisively calling him "Percy Fourflusher") claiming that a man he met in Montreal, Canada, using the alias "Raoul" had been deeply involved, as was his brother Johnny, but not himself, further asserting that although he didn't "personally shoot Dr. King," he may have been "partially responsible without knowing it," hinting at a conspiracy. He spent the remainder of his life attempting (unsuccessfully) to withdraw his guilty plea and secure the trial he never had.

    and

In 1997 Martin Luther King's son Dexter King met with Ray, and publicly supported Ray's efforts to obtain a retrial. Loyd Jowers, a restaurant owner in Memphis, was brought to civil court and sued as being part of a conspiracy to murder Martin Luther King; Jowers was found liable, and the King family was awarded $100 in restitution to show that they were not pursuing the case for financial gain.

Dr. William Pepper, a friend of King in the last year of his life, represented James Earl Ray in a televised mock trial in an attempt to get Ray the trial that he never had. Pepper then represented the King family in a wrongful death civil trial against Loyd Jowers. The King family does not believe Ray had anything to do with the murder of Martin Luther King.[2]

and then, from the Wiki on Loyd Jowers,
    wiki wrote:
Loyd Jowers was the owner of a restaurant (Jim's Grill) near the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. In December 1993, Jowers appeared in ABC's Prime Time Live and related the details of an alleged conspiracy involving mafia and the U.S. government to kill King. According to Jowers, James Earl Ray was a scapegoat, and not involved in the assassination. Jowers believes that Memphis police officer Earl Clark fired the fatal shots.

In 1998, the King family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Jowers and "other unknown co-conspirators" for the murder of King. A Memphis jury found Jowers responsible in December 8, 1999 and that the assassination plot contained also "governmental agencies."

United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division started investigation on Jowers claims August 26, 1998. The investigation was completed in June 2000, and found no reason to believe Jowers' allegations.

    Of course,
the GOVERNMENT does not believe the claims, even though the King family themselves believes it to be a "conspiracy" and a jury seemed to be convinced.

    lol.
but once again, only "crazy" people believe in "conspiracies", right?
    ;)

The word on the street was that it was an evangelical west coast vs. east coast thing. Dr. King in one of his sermons had disrespected a west coast minister...said something about his faith being weak.

i think he died before his time and whoever killed him robbed the world of a great man with great ideas. Let's pursue those ideas b/c dwelling on what may or may not have happened that April day won't help us change people for the better.

That was my favorite episode. It was brilliant. :)

Martin Luther King might have been killed for the exact same reason CSM killed him in the X-Files. It was a speech King gave on April 4, 1967, exactly one year before he was shot. He spoke about America's involvement in the Vietnam war, and how they were over there to occupy the country. That was the speech Cancer Man was listening to in the background when he was typing on the typewriter, writing one of his stories(Raul Bloodworth). :D
And it's the same reason conspiracy theorists believe JFK was killed - because of the war in Vietnam. He was opposed to it, so they killed him. Same thing could have happened to King. The fact that he was shot exactly one year to the day after making that speech is highly suspicious.
