yeah its all rather embarrasing (im indian). all gere did was kiss her on the cheek!!! although this is the country where couples get beaten up if they kiss or hold hands in public.... india is still an extreamly traidtional and modest country. it will take some years but they will ease up. it is already happening with the much larger middle classes becoming more western and more liberal

I think the Key Word you are looking for is 'Extremist'. Most of the people of India didn't freak... the hard-core religious conservatives did. Just like the hard core Muslim conservatives freak out when a cartoon of Mohammed is published or the hard-core Christian conservatives freak out when they see a nipple for 1,6000th of a second at a halftime show.
Sorry... but it is difficult to seperate the words religion and extremist when talking about fuckers that get a stick up their asses for things that are meaningless to the majority of the populous.

    GASP ....

I know, stupid, eh? Cosmo's point is hopefully valid, though. One hopes the vast majority of India's billion+ populace didn't care that much.

It's always those extremist fucks that get the press. Be it those Indian fucks or Bin Laden fucks or Al Sharpton fucks. Like, I know a lot of black people and none of them tell me that Al Sharpton speaks for them. They sometimes agree with him... but, he is not their voice. The same holds true for Christians... how many Christians will tell you that Jerry Falwell or Fred Phelps speak for them? My guess... not many. They may agree with some of the opinions of these extremists, but being the overall spokesmen for their faith... I think not.

  • The thing is, in India, Public Displays of Affection are taboo because it really offends the conservative and sexually repressed oldies. My mum would freak if I ever so much as dared hold a boyfriend's hand in front of her (but then again I've never brought a boyfriend home to meet her).

BUT, it's ok to see indian actresses running around celluloid in wet saris or mini-skirts etc! I mean then its ok lol!

I remember reading an interview with an actress called Bipasha Basu who said that on screen its ok for the actresses to wear the teeniest of tiniest mini-skirts and flounce around flirting and coming onto the male leads, but as soon as she's off the set she has to change into conservative Indian clothes straightaway because otherwise people will call her a slut! God forbid she ever goes out in public like that. Double standards or what!

    I'm Indian too, btw!

Seemed pretty innocuous to me. But then I'm not affiliated with any religion, so what do I know.
But since when has kissing someone on the cheek been the cause of offense?
