The Canadians win game seven of the NHL's First Round Playoffs and the fans riot, loot and vandalize?

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2008/04/22/mtl-habs.html

I don't understand why this continues to happen. It has privously happened several times in Canada, when teams either won or lost a championship.

It's happened several times in the USA.

Why in the world do sports fans riot when their teams both lose and win?

You know, NYC and it's sprots fans get a bad reputation. But I don't recall there ever being a riot with looting and vandalism after a NYC sports team won a championship. I was there for the Mets in 86, the Rangers in 94 and while I'm no Yankees fan; I know none of this occured during their championship wins or loses.

I just don't get this mentality of running thorugh the streets buring cars, destroying property, fighing and other violent behavior; just because your team wins or loses a championship.

But the Canadians didn't even win a championship. They simply won one single round of the playoffs. This is so bizzare.

Why do you guys/gals think this happens? What's going on in the heads of these people?

I mean, there are at least a dozen good reasons to riot in the streets for the political, financial and social causes.

Why sports?

Yeah really... I know it was an up and down 7 game series against a rival team, but if a #1 seed beating a #8 seed in the first round causes this mess, what happens if they actually win the cup?

I guess when you combine enough alcohol and emotion in a big enough crowd, crazy things can happen. All it takes is one idiot to start shit.

i still dont understand this... you originally would play hockey because there is snow all over the place and the only place that has a flat surface would be a frozen lake.. you played thsi ridiculous thing called hockey because you couldnt play baseball, football (very hard but fun), basketball.... so now they have hockey in places where it doesnt snow... makes no sense... play a real sport.

skating around on ice skates hitting a flat black heavy puck at each other is not exciting and never will be to me.

    OOOOOHHH THE POWER PLAY...

4 on 5... big fucking deal.

Basketball and Baseball bore me to death. I love hockey!!!! Love to play it and watch it.

    To each his own.

But I do agree that NHL teams should not be in Florida, Atlanta and Tennessee.

I love it when people who know absolutely nothing about something bash it. It really makes you sound like an idiot. Just sayin, sorry.

Anyway, back to topic. Yea it's really lame that these riots happen. I am an American living in Canada because of hockey. They take the sport very seriously here. But I basically think it's just young kids that are looking for any reason to start some trouble. Hockey can be a pretty violent sport sometimes and the game attracts all types. This happens with other sports too though. Ya, wouldn't it be nice if this energy was directed to something beneficial?

i play a lot of different sports and i would say hockey is the best sport out there (not just saying cuz i'm a canuck either) ... you need strength, speed, agility, hand-eye coordination and with the game moving so fast - you need to think that much quicker ... it really is a great game ...

in any case - i really don't know why there was a riot ... we won back to back world series here and nothing ...

I've never heard anyone refer to hockey as not a real sport. it's one of the hardest sports there is in terms of both skill and endurance!

last time I checked...ice skating is hard! ice skating while handling a puck at the same time is even harder!

football is just a bunch of guys slamming into each other occasionally, and they're not even wearing ice skates.

you have to add ice skating with a puck but doing it without looking at it (or else you will get your bell rung) ... also - when you pass the puck ... you have to pass the puck to where your teammate WILL be moving at about 20 mph in a spot that isn't occupied by an opponent ...

If you are going to reduce it down to something that simple then Baseball is just a guy hitting a ball with a stick and running around in a circle.

Why waste time on someone who appears has NEVER played hockey. I was a goalie in ice and street hockey and in ALL the sports I've played hockey was by far the most difficult to play.

People who have never played a particular sport say the same thing about soccer however soccer to me is not as difficult to play as hockey.

Being A BRUINS fan and as much as the much disliked Canadians have dominated the B's to me it was a waste of time to get in an uproar over defeating the Bruins.

Montreal must be very very hard up for a title for them to carry on this way.

In case they win the Cup hopefully they can control their celebratory excitement.
