Hell, McCain knew he was the Republican Nom since like Feb/March. Obama didn't know for sure until mid summer. Seems like McCain and his running mate could have been doing some leisurely campaigning all summer long instead of making commercials about Paris Hilton. What gives?

but why so long after winning the party nomination? Wanted to see how much game he needed to bring against Obama's campaign?
Nope. It is politics and coverage. The announcement will be made when the dems are getting the coverage during their convention. It is just a way to divert a little tv time. That's how it would have been done had the dates been switched. No real mystery.
for the least they could possibly do
What he needs to do is avoid all interviews and standard-style debates in favor of more informal town-hall style meetings. He's actually pretty good in those and Obama, surprisingly, is not.
Style-wise, I thought McCain outshone Obama on the faith forum.

I agree with everything youre saying Slight. I was surprised that McCain did better than Obama that night, he came across as much more open and genuine than Obama IMO.
