Music Novice Needs to Know Essential Bands and Cd's

I'm pretty much a beginner in exploring music, somewhat. I'm nowhere near as fluent as some of you here!

So, anyone give me a rundown of the must have artists and CD's I should listen to to have a pretty decent music collection?

Since I also can only keep up with a few artists as I don't listen to music as much as many of you guys, I'd like the things that are most 'necessary' to have in my music collection. It doesn't have to sound exactly the the bands I list below, but you get the general gist of what I go for. A good mx of the old and new would be good, if possible.

I only really like a few bands so far.

Bands I already Like:
Pearl Jam (my favorite for 6 yrs) The only band I've heard all the albums of and love all of them.
REM - But my interest in them is wanning

others:
Arcade Fire
Death Cab for Cutie
Decemberists
Postal Service
Neko Case
The Shins
System of Down

Recently Listened to, but might like more when listen to more:
Muse
Band of Horses
My Morning Jacket
Liam Finn

Music I probably will never like:
Motley Crue, AC/DC type music
Eagles type
Slayer/Type 0 Negative /Static X type
I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened.

Just pasting my favourite artists list across from my rateyourmusic.com profile, here are some bands and artists your life will be improved by listening to:

Arvo Pärt, Autechre, Bad Brains, Big Black, Boards of Canada, Boredoms, Burzum, Charles Mingus, The Clancy Brothers, Die Kreuzen, Eric Dolphy, Eyvind Kang, Glenn Branca, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, György Ligeti, John Coltrane, Krzysztof Penderecki, Madlib, Minor Threat, The Modern Lovers, Nas, Nico, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pharoah Sanders, Port-Royal, Rites of Spring, The Replacements, Wire, Wu-Tang Clan.

The ones in bold being extra-special favourites.

It might seem like a big list but I have upwards of 1000 albums counting all CDs, vinyl and downloads so that really is cutting it back to just the stuff I feel you NEED to hear :) Also, I know that none of them are anything like the type you mentioned but hey, you really can't go wrong with these. You might not like all of them, you might even not like any of them but they are all good bets.

Yeah jeez, a little fucking variety is just wrong. Let's only stick to classic bands. And nothing from the last 15 years.

Or anything that isn't based directly off the blues. Or that uses instruments other than guitar, bass, and drum. Fuck originality and harmony. Rock music should sound exactly the same all the time. . . I don't even know the word to describe people like this. Sad, maybe?

    Anyway, suggestions:

    Beck- Sea Change
    Idlewild- The Remote Part
    Chris Cornell- Euphoria Morning
    Radiohead- The Bends
Modest Mouse- The Moon and Antarctica
    Incubus- Morning View
Ben Folds Five- The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
    Elliott Smith- Either Or
Faith No More- The Real Thing, Angel Dust
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

I actually don't think I could live without that album.

I have Out of Step on vinyl too. It has the most awesome picture of the band on the insert.

I will admit to loving (still) the Bad Touch. that song just makes me laugh. I've added a few off your list to mine, as they are freaking awesome CD's.

I'd throw the White Stripes in the mix. Their first four albums - Self Titled, De Stijl, White Blood Cells and Elephant - are all great. Get Behind Me Satan was just okay for me. Icky Thump is another solid album by them. I'd start at the beginning and see what you think. De Stijl is probably the most accessible for a beginner.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

i saw replacements mentioned(they should have been bolded) they are a must. let it be is probably my favorite.

and i have to agree also with the pixies. surfer rosa is where i started and it served me swell.

velvet underground is another, im sure some mentioned them i just must have skimmed over it. s/t or loaded are my top 2, but every album is very different so its hard to say which to begin with.
