I love 'Ok Computer' top ten album for me. But everything Radiohead has done since has been utter shite. I like rock music and if I wanted to listen to some 'bleeps' and techno (whatever the hell it's called) it'd listen to bands who were genuinely doing this stuff, artists on the White Label forinstance like Aphex Twin or Future Sounds Of London. Radiohead get way to much credit for ripping of a type of music (badly) that most rock fans haven't experienced. Since Ok Computer and the huge letdown of Kid A/Amnesiac i've discovered plenty of bands who are just as good as Radiohead at the peak - Muse, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Arcane Fire, Halo, Decemberists, Band of Horses etc etc.
Oh yeah and Radiohead suck live.
Smashing Pumpkins again I love S. Dreams and alot of Melon Collie and Adore was ok but Mechinca (sp?) was poor, didn't really like the Zwan album much either. I think the best way to describe Billy voice is 'Storytelling'.
I can also jump onboard with Smashing Pumpkins. I do respect them though. I mean I actually really like them, until Billy starts singing. Eeek!
Corgan's voice is strange, indeed!some find it whiney and,in brief, annoying while others find it very special ,in a way that it is so different from any other rock voices! It is just what we mean when we say 'ALTERNATIVE'!And of course it doesn't appeal to everyone...it is just a matter of taste!
I personally adore SP.
Radiohead is great, too. To say the truth it is a bit weird when you hear people say they HATE Radiohead!
I'm not a big fan of these bands either. I have tried to get into them, but I can't. Radiohead have some great songs such as Paranoid Android, Karma Police, Street Spirit, 2+2=5 etc, but I find many of their songs boring.
Also, I love Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins, but I haven't liked any other songs I've heard by them.
the thing is, i really like the music. it's just the vocals that put me off.
maybe i will the discover the magic someday.
Totally understandable, because neither front men have great singing voices. I guess it's one of those things you have to get used to. It's worth the effort because, as you say, the music's great. I suggest you try and get used to their voices, but I understand where you're coming from. With Radiohead start from their early stuff and move on. Listen to songs from Pablo Honey and The Bends. With the Pumpkins, I hated Corgan's voice the first time I heard it, but there was something weird and beautiful about it which I knew held reward if I stuck with it.
Radiohead are one of my favourite bands ever. Some stuff off the last three albums I can take or leave but there's moments of sheer genius there too. They always remain interesting and each new album is an extremely exciting time.
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream is one of my all time favourite albums. I own Gish and Mellon Collie but only like about half the songs on both. I've never felt compelled to buy anything else, but when they get it right (i.e. I Am One, Rhinoceros, 1979, Cherub Rock, Drown, Hummer, Soma...) they make some of the finest music I've ever heard.
i've never been much of a pumpkins fan, can appreciate what they are and what they mean, but they don't do it for me.
radiohead are good but i personally find them overrated. some of the songs are enjoyable, but am i alone in thinking thom yorke can't sing for shit? (and not in a good way like neil young or bob dylan)
i've always considered myself to have a pretty decent taste in music and i'm often very picky when it comes to bands and artists.
two bands that i know many people love are SP and Radiohead. I just CANNOT stand either of them.
i've really tried getting into them, but with no luck. Whenever i tell people that i dont like those bands i always get this look like im a crazy person.
anyways, am i really the only one? anyone agree with me?
discuss.
i don't like either one of them either...radiohead is worse however.
I think we gotta kick this "good taste in music" idea. Everyone's taste is just different. There's a certain point where you can clearly see a difference between good and bad, but after that it's kinda meaningless. I like Smashing Pumpkins. I don't like Radiohead, but I can see why people do.

I understand. Even if I really appreciate Radiohead's pablo honey, creep was/is a great song and that's all.....( Karma police from the ok computer is not bad at all....). I can't stand their "we are so experimental" arrogant attitude. They give me the impression that they feel like the greatest and the rest is just a piece of sh*t.
I never understand why SP was so appreciated. I dislike them. It never fit between them and me.
Beavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
Butt-head: Well, they both suck.
What are you talking about? Radiohead, arrogant? That's ridiculous. I don't know how on earth you could get that vibe from them? They experiment, so what? I think it's brilliant. They could clearly make a lot more money churning out the High and Drys and Creeps, but continue to redefine themselves. If you're getting that vibe from then may I suggest it's from Radiohead fans and not the band themselves?
I can assure you that Radiohead can in fact rock. Here are some examples:
Pablo Honey is pretty rockin' (horrible album, but it's pretty rockin')
The Bends
Bones
Just
Airbag
Paranoid Android (second 1/2)
Electioneering
2+2=5 (best RH song ever)
Thom York doesn't have a good singing voice? PJ is more diverse than Radiohead?
Huh? There must be other Radioheads and Pearl Jams in the world. That's the only way the above statement could even be uttered.
We're obviously all talking about the same Smashing Pumpkins though. Corgans voice while not the worst thing ever, is certainly the only reason I don't think the Pumpkins to be an all time great band.
Congrats, SiD, as you have proven yourself to be a fucking idiot. Way to back up your claims!
How can I back up my claim? This is all subjective, right?
Nah. It isn't.
To say Thom York doesn't have a good singing voice is like saying rain isn't wet. It just isn't true. As for PJ being more diverse than Radiohead, I don't get it. I love Pearl Jam. That is why I'm here. But there are few "rock" bands that have reached the level of diversity or originality that Radiohead have. Again - rain is wet. Can't dispute it.
I do like SP but really dont like Radiohead. But I dont think it has anything to do with your taste in music. I really can't stand Rage against the machine and everyone love them.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
Not really. The difference between Radiohead and Pearl Jam is that the latter is capable of making songs that rock, whereas the former isn't. PJ is far more diverse and versatile musically than Radiohead. For every "Indifference", there's a "Go"; for every "Better Man", there's a "Spin the Black Circle." Etc.
Here, you are taking into consideration only one aspect of the music: the lyrics. As superficial as it sounds, it is the instrumentation that initially draws most listeners; it is similar to how many people when seeking out partners look at outward appearance before considering personality, sense of humor, intelligence, compatibility, etc.
I am sure many country, reggae and techno musicians give it their all. Should we liken them to PJ for that very reason?
i disagree totally.
for every exit music, there's an electioneering. for every sail to the moon, there's a 2+2=5
and i was NOT refferring to just teh lyrics. everything about radiohead is thought provoking....the music especially!
lastly, we weren't talking about reggae, techno, or country. we were talkign about radiohead and pearl jam.

That's heavier than Brain of J, Spin the Black Circle, Go, Leash, Severed Hand, Do the Evolution, and a handful of others?
I saw Radiohead back in June and was totally blown away by the power and intensity of that song in a small venue. However, when I listened to it on CD today it didn't seem to have the same power that I thought it did.
Siamese Dream was a great album...Mellon Collie suffers from being over inflated...i suggest taking your favorite songs and burning them on one CD...doing that turns Mellon Collie into a great album
Radiohead is a great band...what turned me off were the Kid A and Amnesiac albums...they are mostly unlistenable to on cd...but those songs are amazing when played live...for the mild Radiohead fan or those interest I always hand them a copy of The Bends
I got scratches all over my arms, one for each day since I fell apart.
Me you wouldn't recall for I'm not my former.

kid a/ amnesiac, on album, are definitely not everyday listening music. they refelct a time in the bands life. suits it perfectly.
def right about the bends. i've gotten people hooked on radiohead based off of the bends and ok computer, and then they get turned off by the next 2. that's what hooked me personally, but hey, to each his own.

this has to be the dumbest thing i've ever seen on this board....
It's funny how when everyone else disses Thom's voice, people agree and say "I can understand why you'd feel that way." But when I do it, you all jump on my case. This has happened on more than one occasion, which makes me wonder!!!!!!! WHY DON'T YOU TALK SHIT LIKE THAT IN FRONT OF MY FACE AND I'LL KNOCK YOU THE FUCK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

if you aren't listening to
The Bends
or
Gish
then i can understand the hate.
The only good album by either of those bands,
imho.
If I opened it now would you not understand?

hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks

This discussion is about taste and preference, not about quality.
