Courtney Love: looking after Kurt Cobain's artistic legacy

If Kurt Cobain rose from the dead and saw his songs on CSI, he'd probably kill himself again.0

Cobain was very good, but he wasn't what people make him out to be. It's that whole James Dean effect...death somehow elevated Cobain's contributions to music to some extraordinary level that I bet even he would be uncomfortable with today.
uncomfortable with today? shit the man couldn't handle what was going on 12 years ago.
i don't know what is going on with courtney love cause i am not privy to her life. but i imagine she's getting advice from somewhere and doing the best she can. but what i am wondering is, if dave grohl and krist novoselic have any input into all this?hear my name

Courtney owned so much of the rights to the music and she has sold a % of that, I dont think Dave and Krist get a say in what she does with it, they get very limited amounts via royalties as Cobain held most of the rights to the music, I think. Can not be arsed with life no more.0 -
stonetemplejam wrote:Well I got to say Nirvana was great. Cobain was a great artist. I think there was a lot of art to it. He did some very unique things on their albums that set the band apart from the hair bands and started the whole grunge explosion.
Grunge never died it was just labled as post grunge or numetal. A lot of the bands have elements of grunge now days like Godsmack, Audioslave, AOA, Velvet Revolver, Foo Fighters, Fuel, Creed, etc.....
Matter of fact I think grunge is headed for a comeback
we just got a great Pearl Jam record
AOA is coming out http://www.armyofanyone.com
VR is coming out with album 2
Audioslave just release revalations http://www.audioslave.com
burden brothers are releasing mercury http://www.theburdenbrothers.com
hell AIC is on tour
and smashing pumpkins are in the studio recording a new studio album.
This is all good man.
oh god i wonder how many times i will read your lame post on these boards. you already made a thread about this so i see no use to use almost same lame fucking post in another thread (it is out of place in here).
what does nu-metal have in comon with grunge???? can you tell me one song where either layne, chris, eddie or kurt used rap in their songs? or any of the bands they were in used samples. and some of the bands you mentioned are everything else but not grunge. for example in velvet revolver has 3 of 5 memebers from gnr which came way ahead before any of those "grunge" bands.
grunge is not gonna make a come back or anything, its over altough it influence is still strong (but not in fucking nu-metal).
sorry everyone for the rant but i had to get it of my chest.make tea not love0 -

I agree...that was actually the most striking part of the movie..maybe because i'm a Nirvana fan.
I don't mind Nirvana music being used tastefully in films or shows. Key word, tastefully. If they start being used in commercials though, to sell a product, that would suck. the worst thing about this is that the man who made the music isn't around to decide what to do with it.0 -
facepollution wrote:And to those ready to throw the book at Courtney Love, remember a certain Yellow Ledbetter being used in the last episode of friends? Or a little chick flick called Singles........

VR does soung like grunge in a way. Take for instance the song slither. It sounds a lot like AIC or STP. Hey they have the singer of STP for god sakes. VR is like a blending of grunge and hair metal.0

Oh by the way I did start this post before I made it a separte thread. So see I am not trying to piss you off.0

thats irrelivant. the bitch is doing it cause she cant earn enough money on her own 'talent' (and i use that term as loosley as possible). its kurt's music and it should stay that way. im pretty sure if kurt wanted his music in a movie or commercial he would have done it when he was alive.+--+-Official Upcoming Australasian Tour: Member No.5-+--+

I guess he should have thought of that before he blew his head off.I share a cigarette with negativity.0 -

There's a documentary about Courtney Love where this issue is addressed. Firstly she is talented, Live Through This is a great rock record, and Celebrity Skin is one of the best pop records you could ever wish to hear. In total Courtney earned through films and her music $20 million. True to form she blew the entire lot on drugs in the past few years. Of course you can blame her entirely and say it's her own fault, but she has had an incredibly fucked up life (probably far worse than most people would ever consider) and as such, to my mind at least, it's totally understandable that she has made her mistakes, and everyone deserves a second chance.
She sold part of the rights so that she could get her life back on track, which includes being able to provide for her daughter, Kurt's mum and her friend who has cancer, which is fair enough. In addition, she wanted the music to be preserved and for it to reach new audiences, kind of like how Jeff Buckley's mum has released a load of 'new' Jeff Buckley records since his death - to attract new fans from a younger generation.
Without re-reading the article, I'm pretty sure it said his music would not be used in commercials (which I personally would also take issue with). But like it or not, tv shows are art of some sorts, and if a Nirvana song can help enhance a particular scene where is the harm? How does anyone know what Kurt would have wanted? Pretty much all of the other big Seattle bands have appeared in films and tv shows, and are still deemed credible, why are Nirvana any different?0 -

Well Kurt did leave the rights to HER. One could argue that her selling off the rights to some of the music is a good idea, because at least that way the music is in the hands of a slightly more rational person.....0 -

actually i think by right of marriage she obtained them. but just so you know, i am a fan of courtney and i am a huge nirvana fan. i have mixed feelings about this but it's not my call. but i'm sure i'll cope.
and sure the rights may be in the hands of a more rational person than courtney. and i'm sure his sole motivation will be his love of nirvana and not the revenue generated by any such move.hear my name

There just seems to be this really ridiculous belief by some people, that they are the only ones who really 'understood' Kurt and his music, and therefore they know what is 'best' for his music, which to my mind is fucking stupid.0 -

You might want to read the article...BrainOfJD wrote:Primary Wave Chief Executive Lawrence Mestel, former chief operating officer and general manager of Virgin Records, says he expects most licensing deals for Nirvana songs will be with the producers of movies and TV shows. But he adds that Primary Wave will also consider doing advertising deals if the right partners emerge.10 million dune buggies comin' down the mountain0 -

Fair enough, I think I was referring to the bit where it said it would never be used in a hamburger advert.... I only skim read it the first time round. To be honest I very much doubt it would happen, they aren't stupid people, I think they realise how important Kurt's music was to his fans.0
