mike's 2008 distortion tone

listening to the bootlegs, he's got something in there that is really nasty and fuzzy, almost like a big muff or a fender blender. i searched the board, here, and someone said that it was a fulltone distortion pro. as far as i know, though, this pedal isn't capable of the tones mike's getting on songs like "all night" and "brain of j." or is it?
anyone know?
anyone know?

I know Mike owns a Fender Blender (based on an old interview), but I don't know if its a part of his touring gear ... That'd be awesome if it now was.0 -
fulltone distortion pro is stone's new pedal for You Are, replacing the old Sansamp Classic (that was originally from Jeff's board in the mid 90's)9/29/96, 8/29/98, 9/8,11/98, 7/28/99, 8/23,24,25/00, 10/13/00, 4/15/03, 4/30/03, 7/8,9,12,14/03, 10/1/04, 9/30/05, 10/1/05, 5/4,5,13,27,28/06, 6/1,3/06, 6/19,20,22,24,25,27/08, 7/1/08, 8/4,5,7,16/08, 8/21/09, 10/27,28,30,31/09, 5/15,17,18,20,21/10, 9/2/12, 10/18,19,21,22,25/130

Guitarhero27 is right, Stone used the Sansamp for You Are. Mike hasn't used the Fender Blender live. That was only used on the studio version of Nothing As It Seems. The Sansamp was used by both, Mike and Stone, during the TEN sessions (from what I know).
Mike's overdrives for '08 seem to be:
Ibanez TS9(keeley)
BOSS BD-2(Keeley)
Mike used the '69 or '70 from what I know but I don't know if he used it on the tour.Grand Rapids '04, Detroit '06

The BD-2 is definitely a "Mike pedal" if there ever was one!0 -
Haha, that, the wah, the roto/uni vibe, rotosphere....I know they've been made famous by others but they're key ingredients to the "Mike" sound.reborncareerist wrote:The BD-2 is definitely a "Mike pedal" if there ever was one!Grand Rapids '04, Detroit '06

*edit* to the original poster: the brain of J sound has a LOT to do with the 1971 Les Paul Custom in Open D tuning and his amps more so than pedals.
as for All Night - i believe he used his 59 Les Paul on that one....and for the solo's he clicked on the wah and ts9 from what my ears tell me. and again....the amp + guitar combination = Mike's True Sound
I'm not too certain if Mike still has the bd2 on his board.

*possibly* the bd2....
but that's his pedalboard as of late....

I thought he ditched the Phase 90, a while ago...like when he got the MM4Guitarhero27 wrote:*edit* to the original poster: the brain of J sound has a LOT to do with the 1971 Les Paul Custom in Open D tuning and his amps more so than pedals.

very good point....although i *thought* i saw it on his board at MSG night 1...could be mistaken though. Maybe a dyna comp?9/29/96, 8/29/98, 9/8,11/98, 7/28/99, 8/23,24,25/00, 10/13/00, 4/15/03, 4/30/03, 7/8,9,12,14/03, 10/1/04, 9/30/05, 10/1/05, 5/4,5,13,27,28/06, 6/1,3/06, 6/19,20,22,24,25,27/08, 7/1/08, 8/4,5,7,16/08, 8/21/09, 10/27,28,30,31/09, 5/15,17,18,20,21/10, 9/2/12, 10/18,19,21,22,25/130 -
Hmm, was it orange or was it just a single button stomp? There's a "mystery pedal" on his board with a star on it, I think.Guitarhero27 wrote:very good point....although i *thought* i saw it on his board at MSG night 1...could be mistaken though. Maybe a dyna comp?Grand Rapids '04, Detroit '06

no, it's definitely a pedal. he uses it on some songs and not on others. i've been listening to PJ boots for years, and he's never had a tone like that. really dirty, scuzzy, ratty...like he's going for a jack white thing.
there are songs he doesn't use it on, but it's clearly there on a lot of the recent tour. it's not something that's attributable to amps or guitars. it's a very noisy, gain-y distortion. and it sounds great. it's really clear on songs like "hail, hail" or "comatose," too.0 -
