I Can't Find A Good Tone

So today I decided I would find my ultimate tone, the past few months I have been playing with just something that let me enjoy playing.
My clean is great
My overdrive is driving my crazy.
I've tried the OCD by itself sounds alrite
I've tried the BD-2 by itself, not my sound
I've tried running either one through my overdrive on my amp, but the problem is I can't find a tone I love for an overdrive through my amp.
UGH, I wish someone would just throw me David Gilmore's tone and then I would be so happy. That or 20 grand.
I'm thinking of getting a Greedtone (but if I don't like it I couldn't sell it on ebay because no one really knows about it)...or maybe I'll just take out the big bucks and get a BJF pedal.

That's what I'm using to find a good tone because my Strat needs to be worked on and my strat is my 2nd guitar.
old music: http://www.myspace.com/slowloader
Gibson SG Special
Fender Fat Strat
Ibanez Artcore Hollowbody
through
Fulltone OCD
Boss BD-2
Boss DD-3
Crybaby 535Q
into
Traynor YCV40WR
I don't know what I'm trying to achieve...it just doesn't sound right to me...its one of those things that when you hear it, you will know it and love it, you know?
Thats me and everything I attempt to play today. It all sounds like crap. So instead of breaking something, I'm just going to put the guitars down and walk away!
Haha, I know what you mean but I would never walk away.
Man I love Rivera amps so fuckin much, their overdrive on their amps is just so fantastic....especially the Quiana and Suprema series
Get those Sovtek's out of there. Replace with Ruby 12AX7's and Tung Sol 5881's. I bet that solves the problem. If it doesn't you will still have better tone.

I know nothing about tubes
How long have you had the tubes in and how often do you play?

im not familiar with traynor specifically, but i know a couple "old tricks" that might help you out, and its good experience. On your dirty channel on yoru amp, turn the gain ALL the way down so no signal is getting through, then turn the volume ALL the way up so it is maxed out, now adjust the gain forward and use it like a master volume. By running the amp like this it kind of reverses the usual order, and sometimes a neat tone can be brought out. Also, try playing with some more tube powered overdrives.

Well I got the amp last August and it was in new condition and the speaker wasnt even broken in, it was 2 months old.
I play it about 1-2 hours a day...about 5 or 6 times a week
so yeah I think it's time, lol
I'm going to try that idea
I run my lead channel like that, and then boost it for more gain. Sounds great.
Might be time for the power tubes, but the preamp tubes should be fine.

so what do you recommend I switch them to?

yeah no just experimentr with all parameters of your knobs, theres a tone for everybody ane because its tube driven, it makes it nicer to find what yoru looking for, they are much more responsive to slight adjustments

Now take the OCD, put it on a mid gain setting, set the volume and tone appropriately, and layer it to see what sort of tones you can get.
I get wicked crunch that way.
I tried that before, the OCD gives a very smoothe sound when its played over my dirt channel, but crunchy over the clean
wah wah waaaah!!! ..........viking banjo hits of the 70's!
(
I found a really really nice low gain tone, somewhat PJ soundish but cool. I used my hollowbody for it and it sounds great.
I'll mess around with it some more.
Anyway, I got a birthday coming up so I thought I would get a new treat...I was thinking between.
Menatone Red Snapper, Menatone Dirty Blonde, BJF Pink Purple Fuzz, BJF Baby Blue, or Lovepedal Magicboy
hehe
Dirty your amp is now 840$
I think they realized they are getting really popular so they are upping the price
Don't worry, it takes a while to find the right thing and hint: you never stop looking anyway
I traded two keeley's and a dynacomp I had modded by Eric to get my EGDM, and it was well worth it.
Baby Blue is no longer made. I highly recommend you check out the Dynamic Red Distortion BJF DRD it's very marshally. The PPF is great too, and I LOVE the EGDM in my amp. You should be able to get a very fine dynamic distortion at real life levels, by turning down the level knob on the pedal and turning up the gain. They are very expressive and amp like. Menatone has some cool offerings too, I think you'd dig the King of the Britains and you'd probably like the Tone Bone stuff too.
Yeah I know you never stop looking but I just realized the other day (when I made this thread) that this tone isn't me at all, it's not what I want.
The EGDM sounds great but I don't know if it's me. Tone Bone, I don't care for at all, sound's too fake in my opinion. I was looking at the King Of Britains but the video never loads on musictoyz. I'm not one for the british sounding stuff or the marshall sounding stuff. The only "Marshall sound" I like is the 1974x when its cranked.
Thanks though Pac
Ah, ok, that's a great starting point, for one the Tone Bone dosen't run at plate levels so it might be a little fake for you, clearly you like a ballsy loud overdriven amp sound. EGDM could be for you actually, but I understand not wanting to spend 300 bucks on a maybe all I can say is that I did and it was worth it. I definately think you are looking for something amplike. The Eternity could be in your ball park or maybe a COT 50 which is the classic plexi type of pedal. One thing you might want to think about is a Hot plate or a DR Z airbrake or Weber Mass so you can crank your amp at home without killing people.
Basically it sounds like you like what you have but you want a bit more compression gain and sustain out of your amp, that can be accomplished with a good clean boost or treble boost you can adjust the output with your amp level or through a good attenuator, everything sounds best with the attenuator off, but they help a ton in low volume required enviroments.
One thing you should definately do is go change your strings. Usually when I'm going, uh this is not what I like anymore, I change the strings and feel better.

another total output lowering option (still too loud for you though probably) are THD yellowjackets.
here is the hot plate. http://www.thdamps.com/products/hotplate.htm
Oh, also you might like to check out DAM out of England, JofZ's buddy who makes this killer little yellow box called the Sonic Titan this could also be up your alley. Sounds very close to what you desire.

I think I'm trying to achieve something that will give me a smoothe somewhat high gain overdrive sound for when I need it but also something with less gain like a Gilmour sound, which is probably one of the hardest sounds to re-create. I like the sound of having half-gain and playing some rhythem parts to songs. I want something that will sing to me, ha.
What I need to do first is get a setup on my SG and fix my strat. My strat is messed up, anything higher than the 12th fret doesn't ring out and no matter how high the action is, it still doesn't work. The neck is straight as well.
The next thing I think I need to do is take my amp somewhere where I can turn it up to volume 4 or 5. (I played at our school auditorium which holds about 2200 people and at volume 5 everyone could hear it, it wasn't even miked up.) That way I can find the real sound of the amp and work with it. I may do that today actually...after that I will see what I think I "need" to improve my tone. The one thing I wish I had and although I say it a lot is a master volume. I played a Rivera amp in a guitar shop once and I had the master only on volume one but the channel volume at 8 or so. Sounded great for me, I started playing "Animal" and I was in love. If only I knew about that amp before I got this one. But this Traynor is great for me right now. It's very versitile, I've gone through so many sounds the past year and it has aloud for it to happen. I don't think I've used this amp to its potential yet.
Indeed, I am a big fan of the Rivera Chubster too. He was a very innovative guy when he worked for Fender and I'm sure he still is, I always have fun when I can find a rake head and sit in a private room and play stuff, but your Traynor is a very good amp too, especially for the money.
You should try and talk to Bjorn or Dean Farley about what you are looking for reguarding Gilmore. My guess is that the PPF is the one, and it's certainly one of the best fuzzes out there, but it never hurts to get 2nd 3rd and 25th opinions. You're talking to the king of procrastination and wait and see if something better comes up.
The hot plate is a very good option and investment for you I think, the tone switches help the attenuated tone, and you can get the sound you want out of it at the level you need, it's very gig worthy.
I need one too actually, I don't like the tone through my mini mass.
Thanks for all the info Pac.
I leave today to visit my dad in Virginia and then I get to go to Camden this weekend . There is a good guitar store down near him so I'm going to see if they have the hot plate or anything relative to it.
I'll do my research on this stuff sometime tonite or during the day tomorrow. I appreciate it all!
i just found almost what I'm looking for
Gain is always set at 5.5...
Now I will do this in terms of PJ since everyone knows their songs (as opposed to me using other songs, you will see)
Dirt channel by itself...Not For You, Corduroy, Immortality, Wishlist, Last Kiss
Dirt with BD-2 at half gain....Life Wasted, Leavin Here, Alive, Rearview Mirror
Dirt with OCD at about 2'oclock....Animal, DTE, Spin The Black Circle
I think you get the idea ...when i play either the BD-2 or OCD over the gain channel it sounds similar but not the same, I have to change that a little around but as of now I'm a bit more satisfied
I forgot about one major feature on my amp...THE BOOST...I think I forgot about it because it doesn't work on my footswitch, you can get amazing tones out of that.
Boost is very nice.
