Imagine if Stevie had been #2….
and Running was left for the 4 slot.

It wasn’t pushed through bc it doesn’t have wide appeal. I love it for what it is, but my guess is the fair weather pj fan would much prefer Stevie. I contend Stevie would have caught fire on radio. Running did not.igotid88 said:
Probably the same thing. Running wasn't really pushed though. Wreckage was really the 2nd single. Running is good for radio because it's short and punchydwjmu84 said:Imagine if Stevie had been #2….

Why would it not? It's short and catchy. Nice little solo.dwjmu84 said:

He's talking about single releases not track orderFalling Down said:dwjmu84 said:Imagine if Stevie had been #2….

Awesome! I love this song so much ❤️0

Just because Wikipedia says "Running" was a single, it doesn't make it so. "Running" was not serviced to radio. Think of "Running" as the modern-day equivalent of a B-side to the "Dark Matter" single.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0

Who You Are was the first single dropped from No Code. He’s implying that the album would have been bigger if they released Hail, Hail as the first single.igotid88 said:

As on2legs knows, they didn't want No Code to be bigger and chose that single deliberately to undercut the album's popularity. In a world where No Code approaches the levels of popularity of its predecessor albums, the band may have imploded and we'd all be on some other message board right now.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0

That’s what I meant too. Who you are shouldn’t have been the first single out of No Code.igotid88 said:

Vocally it is modern-day Word Salad Ed and is not sing-alongable. Stevie is classic Ed vocal style and is easier to mimic. That's what appeals to the masses. But otherwise, yes, Running does have nice riffs. Just wish it had better lyrics.

Pearl Jam - Waiting For Stevie (Radio Edit)24-bit/48kHz0

The vocals in "Waiting for Stevie" are slurry and strained, and it has no chorus and is not easy to sing along with. This is not what appeals to "the masses" in 2024. Pearl Jam reached as broad of an audience as it can reasonable reach in 2024 with "Wreckage"-- number one at rock, alternative and Triple-A-- and "Stevie" has less broad appeal than "Wreckage." To be clear, this is not about which song is "better." It's not about individual fans' subjective feeling that "Stevie" rocks and "Wreckage" sucks. If you're a rock band and you want to reach the broadest audience, midtempo ballads will always penetrate more than riff-based rockers. Even Pearl Jam proves this. "Better Man" reached a much bigger audience than "Even Flow." Hell, their biggest hit was "Last Kiss."ceska said:igotid88 said:
