You can't have a 90s show without at least a mention.

The rock scene was still big in 1996(?)

Hyde's not in it because of rape allegations. I think they can find some other character being into rock.

He is a Pearl jam fan so in another universe we would have had an actor heavily push for Pearl Jam references and adlibs I would imagine.

The premier episode should be them waiting in line for No Code, listening and being all "what the hell is this?". Then, over the course of the series, it grows and them and by the finale they all realize its true genius. Series fades out to "Off He Goes".

Do people think they're going to research how big bands were in that specific year? Or much at all? It would not surprise me if someone mentions going to a Nirvana concert (in 1996). It's about teenagers in the mid-90s. There's going to be Pearl Jam.

Yes, the end of every show will have a transcript followed with APA citations.

Teenagers in the mid 90's played No Code once and asked, What is this shit? Then they moved on and played their No Doubt, 311, Green Day and The Offspring CDs, maybe Oasis too.

Well Nirvana was way more popular at the time. I mean, the people spoke, In Utero took only 4 months for hit 1 million albums sold in 1993. Only 4 months!!! Any other band in 1993 wished 1 million people heard their record

This might be true, but again, so what? It's a sitcom that's playing on our nostalgia; it's not about what actually was, it's the general feeling of the era. Guaranteed grunge in general, and Pearl Jam in particular, has a significant presence.

With rock's decline in current day popularity, I would bet there's going to be more emphasis on nostalgic pop/hip hop and R&B. Gotta cater to those masses.
As for rock, Alanis Morrisette or even riot grrl rock will probably get name dropped before Pearl Jam.

I know, I was joking. In fact the numbers show that the people loved PJ and Nirvana was declining in popularity, at least based on cd sales which is all they went by back then. Kurt dying cemented their legacy as a band that will always be named in every top 10 list but the truth is, there is no way in hell that Dave Grohl would have stayed in Nirvana as just the drummer. That band was breaking up either way. Maybe if PJ sold their Jeremy or Alive shirt at Target just like Nirvana does, all the kids today would know the band. Guarantee 90% of the kids walking around with Target made Nirvana shirts have zero clue Dave Grohl was even in Nirvana.

Takes place in '95 not '96. I'd be shocked if PJ wasn't mentioned a few times. They were still one of the biggest bands in the world at that time.

it would be pretty funny if they threw some obscure jokes in there about how they'd never "sell out" and make an exclusive deal with a big chain or something to that effect. but that might be too obscure.

Starting in season 5 of That 70s Show all the episode titles were the names of songs. They did one band per season. In season 5 all the episodes were named after Led Zeppelin songs, season 6 was the Who, season 7 was The Rolling Stones, season 8 was Queen. I had wondered if they were going to do that with the 90s show using 90s bands but it doesn’t look like it so far.
