absolutely i'm for accountability. but i'm for genuine accountability, meaning if a guy goes out and rapes a woman, i blame that man. i don't blame his mother for sexually abusing him, i don't blame the woman for wearing sexy clothes or the neighbors for not knowing the guy was a rapist. i like to keep my accountability contained to the immediate vicinity rather than sending out tentacles of blame as far as i can reach. did i make it seem somewhere that i was against accountability?
Okay.
So we are in agreement. If someone feels the need to purchase a pitbull and it mauls a neighbourhood child... they are guilty of assault with a deadly weapon. They had an inherent responsibility to train, control, and contain the dog they desired and, obviously, failed to do so. Shrugging their shoulders, putting the dog down, and going out and purchasing another does not cut it.

Right?
But so many of these attacks are a complete shock to the owners. I can't even remember how many times I've heard the owners of pitbulls that attacked said that it was the most gentle and lovable dog ever, gentle as a mouse, great with kids, never gave them or anyone else a reason to believe it would ever do such a thing... and suddenly it ripped a kid's face off for no apparent reason. Should those people be charged too?

Yes. Of course.
This is the risk you assume when you decide to take on a dog that, as you have just expressed, can be unpredictable and dangerous.

As has been pointed out several times, that is the nature of dogs in general, not just some specific breeds.

Owners should be responsible for their dog no matter what the breed. The policy we are discussing doesn't discern. But let's be real: I'll roll the dice on a golden lab playing nice with the neighborhood children over a pitbull any day.

I basically disagree with that though. That is not the nature of a lot of dogs. Not all dogs have the same tendency towards viciousness. It's really a matter of degrees. I.e. 1 in 10 pitbulls attack to kill for no reason. 1 in 20,000 labs (or some other less vicious dog) do the same (not actual stats, obviously - just making a point).

Exactly. I feel like this "but all dogs could attack" concept is a real cop out, or an unjustified defense of pit bulls and other notably dangerous dogs.

The difference is, if you don't like cilantro you won't have a change of heart by eating some... If you don't like pitbulls you WILL have a change of heart by owning one. When you come home from work and it's tail wags so hard it's whole body shakes...when it watches you get ready in the morning, and watches as you leave everyday...when it flops down on your lap and looks at you with big loving eyes, and sleeps peacefully because it trusts you and is glad of your company...when it lives it's entire life and dies without harming anyone or anything, like the vast, vast majority of pitbulls do... You will change your mind for sure.

But gambs, I've never personally owned that breed (my husband and his brother have), but I've learned about and have come to respect and love them. My mind has definitely changed.

I guess.
But, of course, this means you overlook all the other pitbulls that have killed or maimed children.
Some exotic pet owners say, "My chimpanzee would never hurt anyone. You should see the way it behaves around people!" Well... whoopdy-doo. Have you seen what some chimpanzees have done to people?
As expressed, people in general are simply not very good at being responsible they're not smart or responsible. There are good chimpanzee owners and there are good pitbull owners, but it doesn't matter if we are looking to safeguard society from danger. Pitbulls can be deadly. And, in many cases, they are.
You don't think dogs with a much lower capacity for inflicting harm can be as loving as a pitbull? I do.

See I beg to differ. Cilantro is an acquired taste, needs to be fresh and served on certain foods. Think it gets bad rap due to "chef's" adding it to dishes so they can sound different. Or you folks getting it all wilted and old at taco cabana.
Taco's al Pastore off an actual spit, small slice of piña from spit, topped with tomatillo green sauce, onions, cilantro and healthy squeeze of lime. Mmmmm

I think a big issue here that many of us have missed up to this point (myself included) is exactly that, their ability to inflict harm. many dogs are assholes. many small dogs would LIKE to tear another dog apart. they simply CAN'T. but this breed has that ability. so they seem more vicious than, say, a pomeranian. but when a pomeranian attacks us, we laugh.
so, do we think that pit bulls have a worse temperment than other, smaller breeds? or do they just have the same temperment, except with the ability to match it?

Your last question is debatable. To that, I would suggest pitbulls have a propensity for violence given their roots. That's not to say every pitbull is going to be violent or that they are not capable of loving things... I'm only suggesting that in that moment when their aggressive instincts are triggered.. it can suck for something.
You can skillfully train anything- I've seen domesticated lions and tigers seem like the most loving animal in the world. This fact doesn't change the nature of the beast however: a dangerous animal is a dangerous animal.
As you've agreed to... we think its funny when a pom growls and tries to bite our foot- we even allow it to because what can it do to us? Its not funny at all when a pit is coming after us- these encounters typically mean the hospital
let's just ban all breeds that have ever killed a person. especially those little rat dogs that kill babies in their cribs like POMERANIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you think what I believe is stupid, bizarre, ridiculous or outrageous.....it's ok, I think I had a brain tumor when I wrote that.

A few years ago, I felt as if you were capable of maintaining an intelligent discussion from the challenging side (gun ownership for example).
Lately, your comments seem to reflect the musings of someone going down with the sinking ship. Do you have anything to say to the last couple of posts? Or are they slam dunks and fatal blows to the 'dangerous dog' discussion?
no man, I'm saying you've convinced me. i'm using your logic, i'm trying to save lives. so let's ban all dog breeds that have killed a person. if they have killed someone it shows they have a propensity for violence. you're saying about pit bulls, I don't care that millions of them are regular dogs. a teeny weeny fraction have killed people so let's ban them. i'm jumping on your sinking ship man, i'm saying I don't care that hundreds of thousands or millions of a specific breed aren't killing people. if they have killed in the past they can kill again. so let's ban them. i'm shocked that you would be against that. i'm just asking you to expand your genocide to breeds other than pits.

you know what thirty, I was thinking..maybe i'm misinterpreting your posts. from your posts, you are definitely in favor of a pit bull ban. if i'm reading it right, there would be some kind of grandfather/sterilization clause that would allow current owners to keep their dogs as long as there were no more puppies. is that correct or missing something?

More famous last words in the manner which I described in my previous post!
There needs to be a line for what is acceptable for a pet and what isn't given what we know of the animal and what we are prepared to accept given the inherent risk associated with it. Some feel that the line should be moved further down to not only include cougars, lions and gorillas... but aggressive working dogs like pitbulls.
It's okay. Even though you are wrong and know it... pitbulls likely aren't going anywhere anytime soon. So, own as many as you wish: crop their ears, place a spiked collar on them, and take them for walks with your AR-15 slung over your shoulder.
oh brother man, you started losing me comparing wild animals with animals domesticated for tens of thousands of years........again. and completely lost me at i'm wrong and I know it. but seriously, about your admirable pit bull ban, do I have it right?

I've known a couple of pit bulls very well, although they weren't mine. I wasn't scared of them - they were sweet (although had a weird hate for police officers, which was really fucking weird). They never hurt anyone. But that doesn't change my opinion, because I acknowledge that they are just a risky breed because of those instances where they do attack people or other pets... and I'm sure anyone who has been bitten, had their pet attacked, or someone they knew was attacked, would agree. I don't support killing or somehow treating them worse than any other dog, and don't think they should be taken away from their good owners or anything. I just think that the breed should be allowed to die out so that the problem goes away. I just don't see any good reason for them to continue on as a pet people can own. It's not like there aren't a ton of other awesome breeds that can bring the same love and joy to people, but with less of a tendency towards unexpected or unprovoked vicious behaviour.

NO WAAAY!!!!
Pitbulls are not dangerous and pose very little risk to people. Those statistics offered earlier in Ontario are outliers. And so what if children get disfigured from a pitbull attack? How about someone's baby toe getting tickled by a poodle? Huh? Are you ticklish? That's a form of torture you know.
What are we gonna do... ban all things that tickle people too? Sheesh.
